Wow. That was unexpected - it's not too often I hear somebody talking about DICOM outside of work...

I know that there's a PHP PEAR module that'll read 'em, and allow you to dump the DICOM info/pixel data to separate places, but it'd require writing a PHP script to do it. In Windows, there's a nifty program called DICOMWorks that's pretty slick, but I haven't heard of anything for Linux.

I'd definitely be interested in it, though...

Hello sidkdbl07 and Z?

For Dicom files (.dcm, .acr) you could try "display" from the media-gfx/imagemagick package, try the none-opensource x11-misc/xnview (never tried it) or just use The Gimp. By default Gentoo installs a dicom plugin (/usr/lib/gimp/2.0/plug-ins/dicom) but you have to load it manuelly. ;)

Have fun, bye: rukka

Maybe a little late, but I have been searching for a DICOM viewer and found this URL

http://www.psychology.nottingham.ac.uk/staff/cr1/dicom.html

Hope it helps...

Dear Loyal Gentooists,

I have received a CD-ROM containing important medical images of my good friend.

I am unable to read them since they are in DIACOM format.

http://www.sph.sc.edu/comd/rorden/dicom.html

Can someone please assist me with viewing them?

Thanks :)

I found myself in need of a DICOM viewer once again after a while. I got Ginkgo to work once on a non-gentoo (read ubuntu) system which has been reinstalled many times after now.

http://ginkgo-cadx.com/en/

Gonna try again on my gentoo box now. Perhaps this application will make its way into portage one day :)

It's in portage, checked it on my own box.
Gerard.

Seems that my Gimp cannot handle the images. Not sure if im missing a useflag:

Code:
[ebuild   R    ] media-gfx/gimp-2.8.10-r1:2  USE="alsa bzip2 dbus exif jpeg mmx png postscript python sse svg tiff -aalib (-altivec) (-aqua) -curl -debug -doc -gnome -jpeg2k -lcms -mng -pdf -smp -udev -webkit -wmf -xpm" LINGUAS="en_GB nl -am -ar -ast -az -be -bg -br -ca -ca@valencia -cs -csb -da -de -dz -el -en_CA -eo -es -et -eu -fa -fi -fr -ga -gl -gu -he -hi -hr -hu -id -is -it -ja -ka -kk -km -kn -ko -lt -lv -mk -ml -ms -my -nb -nds -ne -nn -oc -pa -pl -pt -pt_BR -ro -ru -rw -si -sk -sl -sr -sr@latin -sv -ta -te -th -tr -tt -uk -vi -xh -yi -zh_CN -zh_HK -zh_TW" PYTHON_SINGLE_TARGET="python2_7 (-python2_6%)" PYTHON_TARGETS="python2_7 (-python2_6%)" 19,868 kB

Gimp throws me the following combined errormessage:

Code:
DICOM image Message: '/mnt/cdrom/0000000006494400/0000000006581323/im_14/x0000.dcm' has a bpp of 0 which GIMP cannot handle.
GIMP Message : Opening '/mnt/cdrom/0000000006494400/0000000006581323/im_14/x0000.dcm' failed: Procedure 'file-dicom-load' returned no return values

And getting Ginkgo-CADx to build is stuck at detecting the portage-installed ITK. :(

This is what I get:
Code:

[ebuild   R    ] media-gfx/gimp-2.8.10-r1:2  USE="aalib alsa bzip2 dbus doc exif jpeg jpeg2k lcms mmx mng pdf png postscript python smp sse svg tiff udev webkit (-altivec) (-aqua) -curl -debug -gnome -wmf -xpm" LINGUAS="nl -am -ar -ast -az -be -bg -br -ca -ca@valencia -cs -csb -da -de -dz -el -en_CA -en_GB -eo -es -et -eu -fa -fi -fr -ga -gl -gu -he -hi -hr -hu -id -is -it -ja -ka -kk -km -kn -ko -lt -lv -mk -ml -ms -my -nb -nds -ne -nn -oc -pa -pl -pt -pt_BR -ro -ru -rw -si -sk -sl -sr -sr@latin -sv -ta -te -th -tr -tt -uk -vi -xh -yi -zh_CN -zh_HK -zh_TW" PYTHON_SINGLE_TARGET="python2_7 (-python2_6%)" PYTHON_TARGETS="python2_7 (-python2_6%)" 0 kB

Total: 1 package (1 reinstall), Size of downloads: 0 kB
ikke@localhost ~ $

As you can see I have a lot more flags enabled.

I tried to find DICOM files on the internet but don't know how to d/l them.

When I do "File Open" in Gimp I get a window with in the bottom right a button "All Files" or "All Images".
When I click it I get a dropdown menu with all the filetypes gimp can open.
It contains "DICOM image (*.dcm *.dicom)"

According to what I found on the internet Gimp and Imagemagick are Linux programs that can open them.

Sorry if this doesn't help.
Gerard.

Tnx for the response. Much appreciated!

I changed my useflags to match your but it did unfortunately not seem to help. I noticed that the Gimp is able to open some files, but far from all. About 1 in 25 images.

Guess im gonna spend some more time in getting Ginkgo-CADx to compile :)

Thanks for the suggestion but using a on-line service would have too much of an impact on privacy.
