Before you tell me to stop whining and unmask it, there's a lot to unmask and AFAIK no way to do it without adding 150 rules to your unmask file/directory. Plus I tried it and ran into a dependency hell that gave me flashbacks of Red Hat, which is good reason for it not to be released ;) but then what's holding up the other packages?
If it is simply a matter that you do not want to manually add the packages to package.keywords, try using app-portage/autounmask as described in the topic "autounmask - unmasking packages the easy way".

That does not work if you use split builds as you still have to go through each kde app you have installed and add manually or via autounmask to unmask.

Autounmask if great at adding entries to unmask but until it can read what kde apps you have installed and also add them to unmask or all kde apps i would not call it 'auto' for kde split builds, i ended up just using one of the kde unmask lists posted in forums.

Considering that there is no reason to install everything which has been unmasked, why not simply autounmask kde-base-kde-meta-$version or autounmask -noversions kde-base/kde-meta?

That doesn't work for some reason:

Code:
Aether package.keywords # autounmask -pn kde-base/kde-meta-3.5.7

 autounmask version 0.21 (using PortageXS-0.02.07 and portage-2.1.2.7)

 * Using repositories:
     /usr/portage
     /usr/local/portage

 * Using package.keywords file: /etc/portage/package.keywords/autounmask-kde-meta
 * Using package.unmask file: /etc/portage/package.unmask

 * Unmasking kde-base/kde-meta-3.5.7 and its dependencies.. this might take a while..

 * Added 'kde-base/kde-meta ~x86' to /etc/portage/package.keywords/autounmask-kde-meta
 * Added 'kde-base/kdenetwork-meta ~x86' to /etc/portage/package.keywords/autounmask-kde-meta
 * Added 'kde-base/krdc ~x86' to /etc/portage/package.keywords/autounmask-kde-meta
 * Added 'kde-base/kdelibs ~x86' to /etc/portage/package.keywords/autounmask-kde-meta
 * Added 'kde-base/kopete ~x86' to /etc/portage/package.keywords/autounmask-kde-meta
 * Added 'kde-base/kwifimanager ~x86' to /etc/portage/package.keywords/autounmask-kde-meta
 * Added 'kde-base/ktalkd ~x86' to /etc/portage/package.keywords/autounmask-kde-meta
 * Added 'kde-base/kdenetwork-filesharing ~x86' to /etc/portage/package.keywords/autounmask-kde-meta
 * Added 'kde-base/kdict ~x86' to /etc/portage/package.keywords/autounmask-kde-meta
 * Added 'kde-base/dcoprss ~x86' to /etc/portage/package.keywords/autounmask-kde-meta
 * Restoring files because autounmask was called with the --pretend option.
 * done!

I am just going to do an autounmask on every split ebuild and then manually add in the 3.5.6 entries (if need be), I guess.

This still leaves the question on when KDE3.5.6 / .7 will go stable... :)

yeah. They must be waiting on some dependency, because a KDE release at *.5.7 is certainly solid. This .7 release was a bit of a surprise (although I don't watch the KDE roadmap or anything). Is KDE4 far enough away that they'll do a .8, also?

I think they are thinking about a 3.5.8 release around September and by the end of October they plan to release kde 4

Ive already switched to 3.5.7 and I truly believe that my current testing system works better than the stable one did a few weeks ago, I recently added ~ accept keywords to my two systems x86 and amd64 and I couldnt be happier.

What is new in .7 that I am seeing so happy faces around :) I know they did some changes with avahi/zeroconf which is one of the reasons I want to update to .7, but are there any performance upgrades or system re-orgs that are enticing enough? I am waiting for .7 to move to stable. Currerntly for me to get rid of mDNSresponder/avahi issue, it seems i need to unmerge current kde installs and re-emerge kde.

Has something changed with KDM? I've noticed that when shutting down, the init readout says:
"Would send signal 15 to X" (where X is the PID of kdm)

At the same time (and I'm wondering if it's related) I started getting lockups when stopping/restarting X, in cases where I've already logged out of KDE or done a Ctrl+Alt+Backspace once during the session. The CPU doesn't thrash, but the KDM greeter never comes back and I can't even VT-switch.

Info that might be connected: I'm using compiz-0.5.0 with kde-window-decorator (I have KDEWM=/usr/bin/compiz-start set). It sometimes crashes, and when it does I get a DrKonqi crash dialog. Just a theory, but what if this was happening during logout -- too late for it to display on-screen as X goes down, but still pausing the system? Any thoughts welcomed, I'm not liking all these hard-resets!

Just tried autounmask on kde-base/kde-meta-3.5.7 - does not work, i. e. it does not catch all the dependencies; here's what it is put into /etc/portage/package.keywords:
Code:

 * Added '=kde-base/kde-meta-3.5.7 ~x86' to /etc/portage/package.keywords
 * Added '=kde-base/kdenetwork-meta-3.5.7 ~x86' to /etc/portage/package.keywords
 * Added '=kde-base/krdc-3.5.7 ~x86' to /etc/portage/package.keywords
 * Added '=kde-base/kdelibs-3.5.7 ~x86' to /etc/portage/package.keywords
 * Added '=app-text/aspell-0.60.5 ~x86' to /etc/portage/package.keywords
 * Added '=app-dicts/aspell-en-6.0.0 ~x86' to /etc/portage/package.keywords
 * Added '=kde-base/kopete-3.5.7 ~x86' to /etc/portage/package.keywords
 * Added '=kde-base/ktalkd-3.5.7 ~x86' to /etc/portage/package.keywords
 * Added '=kde-base/kdenetwork-filesharing-3.5.7 ~x86' to /etc/portage/package.keywords
 * Added '=kde-base/kdict-3.5.7 ~x86' to /etc/portage/package.keywords

:(
But actually, I am still waiting for a STABLE 3.5.7.......

Perhaps you should mention that in a different topic.

It seems there is a bug with unmasking of 3.5.7 in portage. When trying to merge kdeartwork-meta-3.5.7 it fails with following output:
Code:

Calculating dependencies \
emerge: there are no ebuilds to satisfy "~kde-base/kdeartwork-sounds-3.5.7".
(dependency required by "kde-base/kdeartwork-meta-3.5.7" [ebuild])

I looked at http://packages.gentoo.org and indeed there is no kdeartwork-sournds-3.5.7, latest is 3.5.6 Can someone version bump it or suggest a painless solution. The brute force alternative is to merge each of those artwork individual packages.

I have filed a bug report: https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=185034

As already mentioned in this thread a few times, we do not bump all the ebuilds since some don't change from .6 to .7 (or even from .5 to .7). Please stop unmasking KDE packages with =cat/package-version. kdeartwork-meta-3.5.7 can also depend on kdeartwork-sounds-3.5.6, please unmask that instead.

I have not unmasked packages with =cat/package-version. My packages.keywords looks like:
Code:

# kdeapps
kde-base/kdelibs ~x86
kde-base/kdeadmin ~x86
kde-base/kdeartwork-meta ~x86
kde-base/kdebase ~x86
kde-base/kdvi ~x86
kde-base/kruler ~x86
kde-base/ksnapshot ~x86
kde-base/kuickshow ~x86
kde-base/kdeartwork-emoticons ~x86
kde-base/kdeartwork-icewm-themes ~x86
kde-base/kdeartwork-iconthemes ~x86
kde-base/kdeartwork-kscreensaver ~x86
kde-base/kdeartwork-kwin-styles ~x86
kde-base/kdeartwork-kworldclock ~x86
kde-base/kdeartwork-meta ~x86
kde-base/kdeartwork-sounds ~x86
kde-base/kdeartwork-styles ~x86
kde-base/kdeartwork-wallpapers ~x86
kde-base/kworldwatch ~x86
kde-base/kviewshell ~x86
app-text/aspell ~x86
app-dicts/aspell-en ~x86

Now what is my mistake. I have also unmaksed kdeartwork-sounds.

Now let me explain another behavior I am witnessing. Rather than doing
Code:

emerge kdebase kdeadmin kdeartwork-meta

as it was not working for artwork, I went ahead and emerged kdebase and kdeadmin. kdebase pulls in kdelibs, so that emerged fine. But kdebase failed to emerge with the following:
Code:

/bin/sh ../../libtool --silent --tag=CXX --mode=link i686-pc-linux-gnu-g++  -Wno-long-long -Wundef -ansi -D_XOPEN_SOURCE=500 -D_BSD_SOURCE -Wcast-align -Wchar-subscripts -Wall -W -Wpointer-arith -DNDEBUG -DNO_DEBUG -O2 -O2 -march=pentium4 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer -Wformat-security -Wmissing-format-attribute -Wno-non-virtual-dtor -fno-exceptions -fno-check-new -fno-common -DQT_CLEAN_NAMESPACE -DQT_NO_ASCII_CAST -DQT_NO_STL -DQT_NO_COMPAT -DQT_NO_TRANSLATION -D_GNU_SOURCE    -o sysguard_panelapplet.la -rpath /usr/kde/3.5/lib/kde3 -module -avoid-version -module -no-undefined -Wl,--no-undefined -Wl,--allow-shlib-undefined -R /usr/kde/3.5/lib -R /usr/kde/3.5/lib -R /usr/qt/3/lib  -L/usr/kde/3.5/lib -L/usr/qt/3/lib     KSysGuardApplet.lo KSGAppletSettings.lo ksgrd/libksgrd.la SensorDisplayLib/libsensordisplays.la -lkdeui -lkio

If anyone is interested I can upload the full build log.

But the weird thing. The kdeartwork which was refusing to merge earlier, now has no problems. There are some wrong dependency calculations in some ebuild, which prevents the artwork to merge unless kdelibs have already merged. Then it has no problems.

Currently I am trying to debug why kdebase fails. My kdebase merges with following use flags
Code:

kde-base/kdebase-3.5.7-r1  USE="arts cups hal ieee1394 java ldap lm_sensors openexr opengl pam samba xcomposite xscreensaver -debug -kdeenablefinal -kdehiddenvisibility -logitech-mouse -xinerama" 0 kB

There is another bug with kdelibs ebuild. In my case when I did emerge -pvt kdelibs:
Code:

These are the packages that would be merged, in reverse order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[nomerge      ] kde-base/kdelibs-3.5.7  USE="acl alsa arts avahi cups fam jpeg2k kerberos lua spell tiff utempter -branding -debug -doc -kdeenablefinal -kdehiddenvisibility -legacyssl -openexr -xinerama"
[ebuild  N    ]  kde-misc/kdnssd-avahi-0.1.2  USE="arts -debug -xinerama" 0 kB
[ebuild   R   ] kde-base/kdelibs-3.5.7  USE="acl alsa arts avahi cups fam jpeg2k kerberos lua spell tiff utempter -branding -debug -doc -kdeenablefinal -kdehiddenvisibility -legacyssl -openexr -xinerama" 0 kB

Notice the problem. kdelibs depends on kdnssd-avahi, but it merged before kdnssd-avahi. Is it the expected behavior?

The aside, the problem kdebase seems to have is that it couldn't find lkdnssd. After merging kdnssd-avahi I will kdelibs and kdebase to see what happens

That is not a bug. :-)

Yes, because kdelibs has a PDEPEND on kdnssd-avahi which basically is a post-install dependency. So that's correct behaviour.

You don't need to re-emerge kdelibs. Just emerge kdnssd-avahi and then continue emerging the rest. The bug actually is a Portage bug that was fixed in 2.1.3_rc7. You'll find the details here: https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=180045

xalan, Is there any reason you are mixing -meta (split KDE) and non-meta (i.e. monolithic KDE)? You should technically run one or the other and only have a mix while in the process of switching to the split version.

For example:

kdeadmin should be kdeadmin-meta
kdebase shoul dbe kdebase-meta

I'm not sure if what you have done was an accident or intentional.

:)

Thanks for pointing out the mistake. It was the result of skimpy reading of the manual and impatience on my part. After I got couple of blocked packages, I tried to install kdebase instead of kdebase-meta and that got stuck. I stopped paying attention to it. I want only a very minimal KDE installation, but kdebase-startkde was too minimal for me. Thats when I started experimentation and got the hotpotch you noticed.

First what command returned those results? Also did you unmask any of the kde packages or those dependent on it for eg: ark?

i don't know whether it's kde or gentoo related, but I haven't had this bug in any other distro with KDE.

Requests for bug fixing shouldn't be submitted to the forums, but instead to bugzilla - https://bugs.gentoo.org!
The closest bug I could find was bug 169953. Are you using xinerama? What graphics card and driver are you using?
