There are so many conflicting posts on these forums it's starting to confuse me a bit.

I'm trying to get 3D Acceleration to work in Gentoo...

I have a motherboard with the Via P4X400 chipset, which is the Pentium 4 equivilent of the KT400 chipset for AMD processors.

I had gentoo-sources as my kernel, and it simply did not support my chipset..

Code:

agpgart: Unsupported Via chipset (device id: 3168), you might want to try agp_try_unsupported=1.
agpgart: no supported devices found.

So, instead, I tried gs-sources, which was recommended to me by a friend of mine who said KT400 AGP worked in it for him. So, I got gs-sources...

Code:

agpgart: Detected Via Apollo P4X400 chipset
agpgart: unable to determine aperture size.

...and it doesn't work.

This is using the modules included with the kernel.

So, what can I do? I haven't played a game in while thanks to this problem, and I'm have withdrawals.

there may be a way to specify the aprature size manually, or there may be a bug in the bios.

I might suggest flash to the most recent driver for your motherboard and try again, alternativly seek out someone who knows more about this than i do and try to specify the settings it can't automatically determin.

I think I found the problem:

Is there a patch for the kernel to better support the P4X400/KT400?

I said 'Fck it' and cut the traces on pins A3 and A11, which forces it into AGP4X mode. Now, it works beautifully.
