Is anyone working on adding Oolite to portage?
In case anyone doesn't know, it's a clone of Elite but it appears quite tricky to install from what I've seen.

Meh, I don't like oolite, it's written by an Macintard and it has a crummy license. |

Are there any Elite-like games other than Oolite that offer the same type of gameplay? _________________ -----+=======+-----

I have played Oolite on Slackware 10.2 Love it. So how much work is involved in the ebuild? I have never done one before, maybe I could help with this one? If not I shall just have to download from their website and install it. _________________ My body is an engine, that's why I eat:)

I suspect its not the best ebuild to start with. It requires GNUStep and all kinds of nonsense. I had a bash script build from svn for a bit but its really a bit of a pain, thats why I was pushing for an e-build |

Clarification: The binary ebuild works. It's the source ebuild that's incomplete. Both ebuilds are on the bug report.
It would be helpful if you posted the bash script. An ebuild is just basically a bash script also. |

I just had a look at the ebuild on there. Then I entered gnustep hell. I had forgotten in truth how bad this is. I felt like weeping after the 2nd hour. I may have a look over the weekend. |

I just tried the binary ebuild this weekend and it works great! Thanks!
It's a well-polished Elite clone. Shame it's not in the regular portage tree. |

Newbie Alert!
Hi, this is my first post to the forum
I've just tried to use the ebuild from https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=106890 after following the guide at http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Installing_3rd_Party_Ebuilds
I've ended up with this error after reaching the point where I enter:
ebuild /usr/local/portage/games-misc/oolite-bin/oolite-bin-1.65.ebuild digest
Quote: | >>> Downloading 'http://oosat.alioth.net/files/active/0/kleptohud.oxp.zip'
--19:26:25-- http://oosat.alioth.net/files/active/0/kleptohud.oxp.zip
=> `/usr/portage/distfiles/kleptohud.oxp.zip'
Resolving oosat.alioth.net... 70.85.70.132
Connecting to oosat.alioth.net|70.85.70.132|:80... connected.
HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 404 Not Found
19:26:29 ERROR 404: Not Found.
No digest file available and download failed.
!!! Couldn't download 'kleptohud.oxp.zip'. Aborting.
!!! File kleptohud.oxp.zip doesn't exist, can't update Manifest
|
Could someone provide some guidance on what I should do next please?
I'm trying to build on a Pentium64 Dual Core 6.4Ghz 1GB
Thx |

This previously-downloadable file has disappeared:
Code: | kleptohud? ( http://oosat.alioth.net/files/active/0/kleptohud.oxp.zip ) |
So remove the kleptohud USE flag. |

Thanks, that pointed me in the right direction. (I had already tried editing the IUSE line in the ebuild, but left the file locations intact. Removed those and the errors disappeared)
Next Problem:
I now have the message:
./oolite: error while loading shared libraries: libxslt.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
the ebuild file says that I should install
app-emulation/emul-linux-x86-libxslt
app-emulation/emul-linux-x86-libxml2
but I can't find these packages anywhere (either Portage or Googling)
Is there any advice on how to continue or have I hit a dead end?
btw, I managed to compile the programme by getting using the 64bit version libraries. It compiled ok, just didn't work when I ran it. |

For amd64 support in oolite, see wiki. oolite needs more 32-bit libraries than Gentoo provides under amd64, apparently. The Debian package (also oolite-data) looks like it works on amd64. |

All Done!
Extracted emul-linux-x86-libxslt & emul-linux-x86-libxml2 from the deb package to /tmp/, copied both over to /usr/lib32/ and it all ran. Didn't even have to change the symlinks!
Thanks for the help..... now I need to find out how to calibrate a joypad |

libxml2 is already available.
Please remove those manually-added lib32 libs and try the new oolite-bin ebuild, which should populate /usr/lib32 itself |

Quote: | Please remove those manually-added lib32 libs and try the new oolite-bin ebuild | Have done so, and the installation completed without errors, (no problems with the "kleptohud" this time).
unfortunately, when run...
Code: | ./oolite: error while loading shared libraries: libxslt.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory | Sorry, but the libraries did not auto-install
I've performed the following: Code: | equery list emul-linux-x86-baselibs
[ Searching for package 'emul-linux-x86-baselibs' in all categories among: ]
* installed packages
[I--] [ -] app-emulation/emul-linux-x86-baselibs-10.2 (0) | So according to 'already available' I should have the libraries installed. I tried a re-emerge of baselibs, but that didn't work either.
Hope this helps... |

Which 32-bit package provides that file? Or which Debian package can it be pinched from |

Here provides a link to libxml2-2.6.27.tbz2. I actually used ftp://xmlsoft.org/libxslt/libxslt-1.1.20-1.i386.rpm ,extracted the relevant files and moved them to the required location.

Please edit the ebuild. It's difficult for me to do it when I'm not on amd64 and so can't check that it works. |
