In mplayer it is possible to select the type of audio output using the -ao switch. (See 'mplayer -ao help'.) On my system both the oss (using the es1371 module in my kernel) and sdl output work.

Any ideas on which one to choose, considering system performance, audio quality, etc. ?

i'm using OSS - using SDL always makes the sound lag somewhat, especially if you 'fast forward" in movies/whatever..

Between the two I would say go with OSS. It's what I use.

Mplayer fully supports alsa09 so I expect it should work fine. I know I've tried it in the past and it work without any problems. Since I rebuilt my box I just haven't configured alsa back in yet. I'll emerge it tonight and then watch the latest episode of Odyssey 5. Tomorrow, I'll let you know how it sounded.

cheers,

My experience with Alsa has been a mixed bag. It works ok for dvd, mp3, and any other sounds, but mmap() support is broken on the snd-cs46xx drivers currently (this is fixed in the 2.5.x kernels) so I went back to OSS. I think it's time to upgrade to an Audigy OEM/1394 now that they're like 50 bucks and Creative has full open source drivers released.

Older versions of mplayer told you to use alsa09 = OSS emulation since the driver was buggy. However the newer builds don't give you this warning so I went ahead and emerged alsa09. With my creative live! card Odyssey 5 sounded pretty good. There were no issues that I noticed but then I didn't have it hooked up to my big theatre system. Just watched the episode on the computer monitor with my little stereo speakers. Once you have alsa configured properly for you snd card it should work. Give it a shot as you don't really have anything to lose.

MPlayer 0.90pre5-2.95.3 (C) 2000-2002 Arpad Gereoffy (see DOCS!)

CPU: Advanced Micro Devices Athlon K75 Pluto,Orion (Family: 6, Stepping: 1)
CPUflags: MMX: 1 MMX2: 1 3DNow: 1 3DNow2: 1 SSE: 0 SSE2: 0
Compiled for x86 CPU with extensions: MMX MMX2 3DNow 3DNowEx

Available audio output drivers:
null Null audio output
sdl SDLlib audio output
mpegpes Mpeg-PES audio output
pcm RAW PCM/WAVE file writer audio output
plugin Plugin audio output

I don't get the alsa or the oss options and when I use '-ao oss' it says it doesn't work. I haven't found anything in the docs.
