I tried to "emerge gnome" and it was working fine until the X-11-libs/gtk+-2.10.6 package emerge process began and then

checking gtk+-2.10.6.tar.bz2 ;-)...
Please re-emerge x11-libs/cairo with the X USE flag set

How is the X USE flag set and where is it set?

The "X" USE flag is one of many USE flag options that form the core of gentoo. Setting it is a very simple matter, but rather than just telling you, I'm going to strongly suggest you read the Portage sections of the available Gentoo documentation to find out that and much more.

Normally, if you want to use gnome or any other DM/WM you're also going to want to set a desktop profile. The steps for doing so for an x86 system are available in the Gentoo Handbook.

Moved from Portage & Programming to Duplicate Threads, refer to topic "Please re-emerge [solved]".

As noted in the handbook USE flags specified via environment variables are not retained as persistent settings so, aside from when a given USE flag setting is itself transient in nature, use one of the persistent USE flag setting methods (/etc/make.conf, /etc/portage/package.use). Also, note that USE flags are case sensitive.
