Folks,
I just installed Gentoo on a new machine (using the Gentoo 2007.0 instructions). It seems that something weird is going on with the timezone setup.
The handbook states that the timezone must be set by:
- Editing /etc/conf.d/clock
- cp /usr/share/zoneinfo/<some file> /etc/localtime
When I do a uname -a, however, I get the following:
Code: | gentoo ~ # uname -a
Linux coffee 2.6.21-gentoo #1 SMP PREEMPT Sat May 19 13:24:03 Local time zone must be set-- i686 Intel(R) Xeon(TM) CPU 3.60GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux |
Any ideas on what's going on? _________________ "My downfall raises me to infinite heights." -Napoleon Bonaparte

The message that you see in uname is harmless, but if you want to avoid it, you need to setup the timezone stuff before compiling your kernel. |

I actually have set the timezone before the kernel compile, and I'm still getting the timezone message with a uname -a. _________________ "My downfall raises me to infinite heights." -Napoleon Bonaparte |

There were some changes made to the handbook; right now, the cp /usr/share/zoneinfo/ step is before emerging the kernel, but it's also necessary to edit /etc/conf.d/clock and define that same TIMEZONE within that file. At the moment, this is done just before rebooting, while editing all other conf.d/ files. |
Ah, thanks nightmorph...this makes sense now. I'll try editing the clock configuration file before the kernel compile and seeing if that fixes everything up.
I'll update the thread shortly... _________________ "My downfall raises me to infinite heights." -Napoleon Bonaparte |

Okay, looks like I was indeed changing the timezone in /etc/conf.d/clock before the kernel compile... I'm still seeing the "Local time zone must be set" message, however, on a uname -a.
btw, I'm pretty sure this strange behavior started in 2007.0. _________________ "My downfall raises me to infinite heights." -Napoleon Bonaparte |

Oops, sorry all. It seems that editing the clock configuration file before the kernel compile does indeed get rid of the "Local time zone must be set" message.
Sorry for the confusion... _________________ "My downfall raises me to infinite heights." -Napoleon Bonaparte |
