Hi,

i use gentoo on x86 / x86_64 for since two years and now I will try it on my SPARC (Blade 1000).

With my .config (2.6.17) my new installed Blade will not boot:

Booting Linux... ist the last message.

Can anybody help me with his running .config and has some Tips for me:

- Is it true that I can use no kernel > 2.6.17 (fcal)?
- Is there something to emerge for FC-AL Disk firmware - how works it
- what ist to do to get my fan quiet (how do I install/configure BBC_I2C)
- are there some other Tips for my Blade 1000 with gentoo?

I hoped that 2007.0 will bring a LIVE-DVD for newbe's like me but it doesn't

I'm gratefully for every tip.

Dony

Here is my Blade1000 kernel 2.6.17-gentoo-r8 .config for your reference. Might have lots of unneeded stuff included but atleast it works :)

linux-2.6.17-gentoo-r8.config

Hi tiketti,

thank you very much for the .config - will try it this weekend.

Is there anything else to do which is not in sparc-installguide (for example emerge firmware / BBC_I2C or whatever)?

cheers

Dony

Too much time have passed since last time I played around with my B1000, can't remember if something special was needed... I've build most of the kernel stuff as modules, maybe you need to put something to /etc/modules.d/ to get I2C loaded but sorry I can't remeber it out of my head for now.

You might stuble to some issue when running X depending on the frame buffer you have in use, but those are already discussed on this forum. I'm sure you'll find those topics easily.

BBC_I2C is controlled by the .config option CONFIG_BBC_I2C. If you set it to y, then you will always have it; if you set it to m then you will have to load it. The module name is bbc.ko, so you can either
modprobe bbc
or add it to your
/etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6
file.

If you have an Elite frame buffer, you will need to install afbinit and download the microcode. Complete instructions in the 4th paragraph here: http://dev.gentoo.org/~fmccor/ If you have an Expert3d frame buffer, no version of linux supports it at all, and you will need to find a replacement. In this case, Creator3D (series 3) = ffb2+ (V) is a good choice (V == Vertical, which simply means that it fits in the case "standing up" as opposed to (H == horizontal).)

Dony, did you finally use 2.6.17 or a newer kernel? My only headache in the SB1000s (and two new 2000s) are the FC root disks, and newer kernels for which ql driver needs external firmware.
Was 2.6.17 the last one including the old qlogic integrated-firmware driver?

Has anyone got an initrd with ql firmware on it?

Hello obmun,

2.6.17-r9 is running for me - I'm not sure that's the latest 2.6.17

I also want to try a newer kernel, but I want to get my gentoo stable running first.

I'm already emerging kde, X, ..... because my blade reboots every 2h on heavy load :-(

--> Chetah+ D-cache parity error at TPC .... ist the last in dmesg

Sometimes on CPU0, sometimes on CPU1.

I use other DIMMS (ALL); still the same error.

OK - I use 1200MHz cu which are not supported in Blade 1000 - but they run stable on solaris and the motherboard and firmare ist still the same on Blade 2000, where they are supported - will try "normal" 900MHz and 900MHz cu to find out the reason.

Regards

Hi all,

everything is running stable now with 900MHz (non Chetah+): kernel, X11, sound !!!

I will try the 900 / 1200MHz cu later to find out the reason for the reboots.

Thank you all for your support.
