Usb ports should work, the only question is to know which type you have. To look that a solution really easy.
Use the last version of gentoo livecd I think it will try to install them), or a knoppix cd (I'm sure it works), let your computer boot on it.
type dmesg, and look which type of usb you have (UHCI, OHCI, EHCI, ...)
so you will know if they are detected and and which module you need to add in your kernel... etc..
Good luck

I recently finished installing (well, is any good OS installation ever truly finished? ) Gentoo on a Dell Latitude, and my USB port worked perfectly well in all of the tests I performed on it.
I'm sure you can get your USB port(s) working. The modem itself might be a different story... That will depend on whether someone has written a driver that will allow it to function. _________________ Help save the world. Adopt an unanswered post.
