Hi,
I've had this issue for a while, and just upgraded my nvidia drivers (to 1.0.9755-r1) and it still seems to be happening. I have a triple head system- two graphics cards: 1x ATI X800XT which is pcie and 1x Nvidia quadro nvs 280 which is pci and running xinerema.

When I boot my system, it goes straight into X and and it asks me to login to KDE. All is fine and dandy at this point, with all 3 monitors on and working with a stretched KDE blue background picture across all monitors. Then it starts to load KDE and gets to the "loading desktop" bit and 3 out of 4 times it'll just lockup the system at this point when it tries to load my background picture (tried setting it to different things and it still does it) and the nvidia card seems to die and screen turns off. Have to powercycle to get the system working again.

I'm not sure if its related but if I wave my mouse around on that monitor while its loading, it seems more inclined to actually load the system. Doesn't always work though so probably just a coincidence. Once it's in, it is generally find and I've experienced very few crashes that go in the same way. I tend not to reboot very often so it runs for a week or so fine.

Tried different kernels, currently running 2.6.20-gentoo-r4. and still the same. I was hoping these latest drivers might fix it, but alas not.
Running xorg-x11-7.1 and KDE is 3.5.5

Nothing seems to get logged anywhere when it happens that I've found.

does your xorg logs say anything?

cheers

edit: if you aren't using an ati card, remove everything referring to either fglrx or ati-config.

Have an ATI card aswell , hence I have that stuff. And, nope. Nothing useful comparing it to the current one which loaded fine:

Code:
mantra log # diff Xorg.0.log Xorg.0.log.old
14c14
< (==) Log file: "/var/log/Xorg.0.log", Time: Mon Apr  2 19:14:50 2007
---
> (==) Log file: "/var/log/Xorg.0.log", Time: Mon Apr  2 19:12:37 2007
1273,1278d1272
<     xkb_keycodes             { include "xfree86+aliases(qwerty)" };
<     xkb_types                { include "complete" };
<     xkb_compatibility        { include "complete" };
<     xkb_symbols              { include "pc(pc104)+gb" };
<     xkb_geometry             { include "pc(pc104)" };
< BOGUS LENGTH in write keyboard desc, expected 5500, got 5504

Cheers,

john
