How to mask evolution from gnome ebuild?

I prefer thunderbird as my email client, so decide to remove or disable evolution from gnome.
I've tried package.mask, but this will block gnome from updating

Is there any method to unemerge evolution permanently without affecting gnome?

I write my own ebuild and put it in a local overlay, deleting the stuff from it I don't want.

Note that gnome-extra/bug-buddy depends on gnome-extra/evolution-data-server. Gnome basically expects Evolution to be present.
