Hi all,

i'm glad to tell i managed to install Gentoo/Sparc64 on an Ultra5. It' great.

i have a nicer console mode with black background and Tux when i boot since i enabled M64 support in the kernel :-)

i'm quite disapointed because i do not manage to get X working on any other resolution/depth than "600x480"/8bits : not really satisfying ! isn't there a way to do better?

the only 'driver line' that seems to work in XF86config is 'ati'. i tried many other drivers i found in /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers but the Xfree message remains "no screen found" with those.

so i got quite a few newbie question:

- am i obliged to Open the box to be sure it is a Mach64 inside?
- is there a specific module to compile/modprobe?
- is there a specific thing i could try with xfree compilation/modules?

note : the miscellaneous XF86config i found on this forum did'nt fit.
note 2: xf86cfg stay freezed once some 'graphics' appears on my screen.

thanks for providing me some clues, or links from where i could learn more about xfree on sun. in the meantime, i'll continue to google...

GENTOO ROCKS!

a happy frenchy Gentoo user on x86, hopping to be as happy soon on sparc64 :-)

Hi.

I've got the same problem (xf86cfg freezes, Mach64 doesn't play nice). You can check which card is in your machine by examining your dmesg. You should find a line like:

Quote:
fb0: ATY Mach64 frame buffer device on PCI

However, this seems to suggest that we might be knackered as Mach64 doesn't seem to be supported...

However. I'm about to try this xf86config file from an OpenBSD user (his dmesg output suggests he's using the same card as us). I'll report back if it works OK!

<edit> You need to comment out the options sections from keyboard and fix the mouse to make that work - I'm working on fixing the keyboard and mouse and will post a hopefully working cfg later on (running at a decent resolution already at least)</edit>

Well.

The modeline etc. works but I'm stumped on the keyboard (all the keys are shifted around all over the place. Could you post your keyboard section as it strikes me that your keyboard + my video will be a winning config :)

Cheers.

Thanks sisyphus

you allowed me to check i was not wrong with my card, and solve some keyboard problems but...

i'm quite confused, having a closer look at the XFree86.0.log , i realized i forgot the two following lines in the 'monitor' section:

HorizSync 30-69
VertRefresh 50-160

it looks a lot nicer now, it allowed the driver to behave the correct way :)
i'm still continuing to optimize all that...

Vive la Gentoo!

Thanks ybby.

Good luck - Hopefully I'll have a working kbd sometime this year :)

<edit>
HOORAY!!! I used your InputSection and the keyboard is now working 100%. Fabulous, thanks.

Code:

emerge wmaker
wmaker.inst

Here I come :D

i have a sunblade 100 with a mach64 framebuffer. i had to downgrade to xfree86 4.2.1 from 4.3.0 since it was rejecting a whole wack of modelines that were perfectly valid and supported by the monitor.
