I'd love to install gentoo on a little-endian mips32 board. I've got a kernel and minimal distro supplied by the vendor; I just need a gentoo stage tarball to get started with gentoo. I found the mipsel4 stage3 tarball on a gentoo mirror which works more than I expected considering that mips32 instruction set does not include all mips4 instructions, eg I can use bash and invoke python but emerge dies with a SIGILL.
It would be really awesome if somebody with the appropriate setup (gentoo running on mipsel4?) could build even just a stage1 tarball for little-endian mips32, or for some lowest-common-denominator mipsel instruction set (mipsel1?)... |

I'm in the process of doing some MIPS1 builds now. MIPS32 is not possible for me, since I lack any MIPS32 hardware (my Qube2 is a MIPS4, and my Loongson boxes implement a subset of MIPS3), and QEMU is waaay too slow.
I'll let everyone know when they're done.

Hey luked,
Over the past few months I've built a collection of MIPS32 little endian packages
(for my Alchemy board). Currently it consists of the "standard" tools (portage,
gcc-4.1.2, glibc-2.5) plus xorg-7.2 and xfce-4.4.
It's a ~500MB tarball right now. If you're interested I could upload it somewhere. |

Well, for the record... I'm currently in the stage2->stage3 transition:

So maybe this weekend, I'll be uploading the MIPS1 stages for Cobalt. These should work on machines like AMD Alchemy-based boards. I've got a prerelease one I could put up for MIPS1 that I'm using on a Lemote Fulong minicomputer just fine, but even there I had some teething problems, thus I'll wait until I've got some proper stages that work correctly. (with no MIPS4 instructions lurking around)
Note to others, due to memory constraints, they probably won't work terribly successfully on wireless routers -- so don't ask.

Thanks roarinelk ... I'm keen to try building stuff myself from a plain stage, but if Redhatter gets stuck then maybe I'll take you up on your offer  |

http://dev.gentoo.org/~redhatter/mips/cobalt/stages/ <-- The mipsel1 stages should do what you're after. I'm using these quite successfully on Loongson, however, further testing is always welcome.
I hope to get these pushed out to the mirrors in a month or so.

It's not a gentoo-type stage but rather lots of tbz2's created by portage. I built the apps/libs required to get portage running by
hand and let portage rebuild them afterwards. |
