It takes a lot of time. Actually, you can crooscompile most part of programs on your fast desctop computer, but some of them can't be crosscompiled and some of them (bash for example) works strange when it is crosscompiled.
It may take about 2 hour per package of medium size.

Well, I just stumbled over this and must say, I'm impressed.
I've got an quite old Compaq/HP iPAQ 3970 (datasheet @ hp) and would like to know, if you think it's possible to use Gentoo on it - as reported on handhelds.org, familiar is known to run.

Thanks for your (hopefully coming) response and tia,

I think it can work... You can try to use my stages and your custom kernel...
Try dualboot variant...

The Nokia N800 is availlable now,
i prefer the 770 design but the N800 is faster and had an integrated webcam !
you can also transform it to a GPS system by buying package with GPS bluetooth antena and Navicore software !

Hi folks !

I've got an hx4700 myself and I'm eager to eradicate Windows from it.

I've tried the familiar (with Opie/GPE) but I'm not satisfied with them.

Then I found this thread and I'm veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeery interseted using gentoo on my small budy

I've tried to install it (managing to understand as I could, since I don't know russian) but I failed.
I would love to help on this project !

Please , pretty please throw us, an English wiki (or just an hoxto on this forums to start )

Really good job by the way :)

See ya

Gussian HOWTo is avaliable here:
http://ru.gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Gentoo_ÎÁ_ëðë
At the moment I'm translating it to english, it would be avaliable at:
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HARDWARE_PDA
I'll write, when I finish.

For now overlay for pda's avalieble via layman
You can simply add it
Code:

layman -a pda

To build eabi crosstoolchain you need glibc from our overlay until glibc-2.5-r1 appears in portage
gcc-4.1.2 and binutils >=2.17.50

PS stage with eabi will be avalieble soon :-)

I've uploaded stge with eabi and new kernels :)
Kernels here
Code:

ftp://gentoo.ru/projects/handhelds/hx4700/kernel

And sge here
Code:

ftp://gentoo.ru/projects/handhelds/hx4700/stages/eabi

NOTE

Due to optimisation this stage can only work on pxa27x processors with iWMMXt coprocessor
Stage with eabi and older processor support will be avalieble soon

gnueabi stage for xscale (pxa25x) processors is avaliable:
ftp://gentoo.ru/projects/handhelds/stages/stage3-armv5te-xscale-gnueabi-20070303.tar.bz2
It contains system and some other useful packages, such as portmap. It doesn't contain X, so if you want X use old non gnueabi stage, wait while we compile it or do it yourself.

As I understand, strongarm is not armv5, so our toolchains are not suitable for compiling for it. Crosscompiling from amd64 doesn't works for some packages, so to build packages for strongarm I would have to build crosscompiler on my PDA and build system using it. It's too long, it takes about 15 hours to build gcc only, so all process would take nore than a week. I want to build usable system for one arch first.

i have gcc under windows (latest pgcc by mamaich) working no problem (or at least for my simple C++ programming) so i think that strongarm is compatible with other arm CPUs, only with other march (like pentium2 as strongarm and pentium3 as xscale) so i see no problem in this...but again, i know nothing about crosscompiling so i can be completely wrong... but thanks anyway

According to this specs
Code:

Type:   StrongARM SA-1110
Manufacturer:   Intel
Released (year):   1999
Databus Width:   32 bit
Internal Systembus Clock:   66 MHz
CPU Core:   Intel SA-1
Level 1 cache:   8KB data cache / 16 KB instruction cache
Instruction set:   ARM v4

your target arch is armv4
so you can tray to use old gentoo arm stages (2005.0 to my mind)
and then upgrade system to current state

or you can build
armv4-softfloat-linux-gnu
toolchain and build all packages from scratch

First of all you need to build crosstoolchain
Code:

emerge crossdev
crossdev -t armv4-softfloat-linux-gnu

As I remember, portage in that stages can't work woth current ebuilds, format has changed a bit. So upgrading from those stages is problematic.

The Nokia 770 is a Linux PDA
Running software

Hi! I really want to try putting Gentoo on my Nokia 770. There is already a boot manager so you can dualboot

http://maemo.org/maemowiki/HowTo_EASILY_Boot_From_MMC_card

I use this with an 1 GB card. There is also Scratchbox which makes porting apps easy (there is also an install howto):

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-348979-highlight-scratchbox.html

Isnt it possible to install Gentoo the usual way over scratchbox?

Is there someone who want to join this attempt :?: :)
