Hey all,
Just some questions about frambuffers:
What is a framebuffer? (is it a video card driver?)
How do i know if i should use one in the kernel one?
How do i know if i am using vesafb or another frambuffer?
thanks

Your question does not make sense, please clarify.

Assuming that you include framebuffer support when you compile your kernel, you will be using whichever one you configured to be included. For details on kernel parameters used to specify video modes and such read the documentation provided in the /usr/src/linux/Documentation/fb directory.

I meant to say that I don't know if i need to compile one into the kernel.
Let me explain, I have an ATI X850pro card that i plan on taking full advantage of. Now i plan on installing the ATI drivers for it via: http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_ATI_Drivers
But I am unsure if i need to compile anything other than the default frame buffer stuff into the kernel (I am using the standard 2006.1 profile).
So basically, if I plan on installing the drivers do I need to change the kernel frame buffer configuration at all?
And if i do how do i know what to change in the configuration?
Thanks,

The framebuffer devices you see as options in the kernel configuration aren't needed for XWindows to run a GUI. The ATI drivers you want to install are drivers for X only so you shouldn't have to worry about the framebuffer at all.
When you would want a framebuffer driver is when you'd like to display graphics or at very least have a higher resolution on your text console. |
