I use a Blade 2000 with dual 1.015 GHZ US3's 2 GB RAM 2 146 GB FC-AL drives as my main computer and have gotten tired of Solaris as a desktop OS. I have been using Linux for seven or so years and use it for work, but don't have much experience running Linux on Sparc's. I tried Ubuntu, which got past SILO but got stuck at Booting Kernel..., Deb couldn't even get past SILO. Gentoo, WORKED! I was so happy, set everything up, then when I booted up into the kernel I compiled, it did the same thing as ubuntu: it got stuck at Booting Kernel... I may have compiled a kernel that was too big, IDK. Anybody know what would cause this? I am thinking about just copying the kernel off the cdrom and using that.

It's possible your kernel is misconfigured somehow, but there's a nicer solution than just copying the kernel from the cd - that would be copying the kernel config from the cd and building your own based on that. /proc/config.gz has the kernel configuration for the running one on later CDs.

Ok so I jumped that hurdle, my new problem is A. a large amount of udev errors that say unable to start udevd and hotplugd, and B. my keymap is all hosed, I hit "A" the number "6" comes up and everything is all wacked. I fiddled with things as much as I could for udev, but I don't know this component of the OS very well. I did emerge hotplug and emerge udev from the rescue environment, which did nothing.

Not sure what the udev issue might be. Please post the output of emerge --info

As for the keymap, what do you have defined in /etc/conf.d/keymaps? My guess is that it is currently set to sunkeymap. You'll want to change it to a PC style keymap, like us.

Any idea what would cause udev to complain about udev_start_udevd and udev_start_hotplugd? These errors are not only annoying, but bar me from shutting down my system completely.

Also, is there a memory leak in 2.6.17? I have an Intel machine that slowly climbs in memory usage until there is basically none left, yet no tasks are taking this memory. The same in happening right now on my blade 2000.
