I've recently been getting the following error when trying to compile anything related to X...

!!! Error: couldn't find match for virtual/x11 in ....

Yes, I do have X installed, I'm using 4.20-r12. Is there a way to manually tell emerge that I have X installed? It started happening after an emerge sync and a reboot.

I would rather not emerge xfree if i don't have to, the last time I did that, I spent a day trying to get X to work again :)

Thanks for your help!

Try emerge --clean rsync, what version of portage are you using btw?

"emerge --inject xfree" should do the trick.

I don't think that is the problem, but perhaps it will work.

I think his Portage data files aren't recording a package that PROVIDEs "virtual/x11" for whatever reason. If it's actually installed, the inject should record virtual/x11 (see /usr/portage/x11-base/xfree/xfree-4.2.0-r12.ebuild) and the world should be happy.

I was previously using portage 2.0.7; I upgraded it to 2.0.11, did an emerge --clean rsync and now everything works. Yay!

Thanks a bunch! Any idea how my portage got messed up though? (So I won't make the same mistake?)

It wasn't your fault, portage is a work in progress that isn't perfect but is getting better all the time.

I concur. Occasionally Portage just needs a good poke with a pointy stick; fortunately, that stick doesn't have to be as pointy as a reformat/reinstall a la Windows. One or two commands at the console are generally enough. :D
