I thought this was a bug - but been told its not , so Im back here

start konqueror from the menu and it bring the default window . on choosing an icon ( home,network,applications) the HD whirrs a lot, a window opens and after ~45 secs it fails .
Ive done rm -rf ~/.kde/share/mimelnk ~/.kde/share/applnk (but they looked empty to me!)
and it still dies

check dmesg for harddrive issues.
also create a new user on your system and login as that user. Does this problem still exist on the new user?

it is probably some configuration,scheme,theme you have done and I wouldn't know how to tell you to fix it without knowing exactly what was done.
Confirm that /home/username/kde is a symlink to /home/username/kde-3.5 and not an old .kde-3.4 ............
you could always mv /home/username/.kde3.5 and start with fresh configuration for that user or remove that user and be happy with your new user.
