:evil: when i first try and install, i type in modprobe 8139too ..then it goes to the next line (#). then when i try /sbin/ifconfig/ .. only loopback comes up.. HELP

I would recommend compiling support for your NIC into the kernel.

Yeah, but he's trying to install; he's not gotten that far yet.

You loaded the module I guess, however it doesn't setup your device.

If you use a DHCP server, try

dhcpcd eth0

or otherwise follow the install instructions.

Don't you need to raise it first if modprob comes back fine you should then do a 'ifconfig eth0 up' to bring it up just because you loaded the module doesn't mean you have brought it up.

man ifconfig says:

Code:

OPTIONS
       up     This  flag  causes  the interface to be activated.  It is implicitly specified if an
              address is assigned to the interface.


So, no, you don't need to do that.
