sparc64 - why 64bits Kernel and 32bits system

Just an ask.
I've noticed that after installation gentoo on my SunBlade I'm running 64bits kernel, but all system binaries and libraries are 32bits. Is there any reason for this ?

ps: 95% of solaris's binaries and libraries are also 32bit.
