When observing how fast treebeard moves I'd say his topspeed was around 20 - 25 Mph, however, when he calls the ents to attack Isenguard they appear in about 5 seconds. Either when nobody is watching they can travel ludicrously fast or they all happened to be standing nearby. :-D

What do you think?

When an ent falls alone in a forest, do the surrounding trees hear him curse?

The real answer: to keep the movie moving at a tolerable pace for the audience!

Perhaps the Ents are really tree spirits which can "possess" any tree they wish, mould it into their image, and use it as a means for interacting with the physical world. Their spiritual form has no limitations on speed, but once they "possess" a tree, then they are constrained by the physical laws of our world.

Admit it, though. These movies targetted mostly for the geek community wouldn't be nearly as enjoyable if they didn't throw in an inconsistency here and a plot hole there for us to debate until the end of time :P

They could have cut to something else for a minute. :-D

I'm pretty sure that's not it. :-D

It's a book :)

No need for reality as the story is unreal enough so far

Yes, but in fiction you need to keep to the same level of realism throughout. It wouldn't be much good if Sauron was finally defeated by the Enterprise blasting the one ring with phaser fire. :-)
