what should I need to check in order to buy a joypad that will run fully under gentoo? are force feedback joypads working (like ps2 ones)?
the only "joystick" use flag and "emerge -Nav world" is enough to have it working?
and maybe also some modules from the kernel... _________________ Gentoo user since 2004.

To get joysticks, compile the event driver and the joystick driver in the kernel.
The only joystick I've tested under Linux is Microsoft Xbox controller, so I can't say anything about what the best is. Xbox 360 controllers don't work. _________________ I'm too lazy to keep this stupid signature up to date, so here's something more interesting:

It probably could, but I didn't solder that cable to my USB connector. I soldered the cable myself, and I saw the hook up for force feedback but ignored it. Very few games on PC support force feedback, and even less in Linux. _________________ I'm too lazy to keep this stupid signature up to date, so here's something more interesting:

Logitech Rumblepad 2 (PS2-like game pad) works perfectly for me with linux. _________________ There are no dumb questions, just dumb answers. So please help users that are new to linux/gentoo by answering unanswered questions. |

They do, but the xpad driver in the kernel tree is not up-to-date.
There is a gentoo howto : http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Xbox_360_controller_on_Linux
(I did it under ubuntu and it worked too) |

The best gamepad for Linux is a first party Sony Dual Shock or Dual Shock 2 controller with a PSX->USB or PS2->USB adapter. This is what PC gamepad manufacturers are usually trying to emulate. Accept no substitutes. It's also one of the best supported options, because it uses the "hid" kernel module and thus works with every version of the kernel.
The Linux Gamers FAQ links to a project that's trying to get force feedback support for gamepads under Linux. It supports only a handful of devices, not including the one mentioned above, and doesn't look like it will work with current kernels. |

I whole-heartedly agree. The PSX and then Dual Shock 2 controllers are the natural evolution of the SNES controller, making them naturally the best all-around gamepad, period! (in my humble opinion ) Use it for zsnes and use the same 2xPS2->USB adapter to plug in my DDR pad for Stepmania.
It's an EMS "Gun Converter Dualshooter" 2xPS2->USB by the way, got it online someware for like $10-15, difficult to beat that. _________________ Carlton Stedman

I bought a Saitek P880, looks quite like the PS2 controller, but has no Force Feedback capability. I mostly play zsnes with it, I can't complain. Works fine with the event interface driver. _________________ post tenebras lux, post fenestras tux

Any logitech from my experiences will be nice. My friend loves Saitek's well. I have tried both of his and they seem to work in linux just fine. I also have used a xbox 360 controller with out many issues. Some revisions the green center led either stays on the entire time it's plugged in or never turns on. But the driver itself is just fine. |

Logitech Precision Gamepad works 100% and it's also really cheap. I got it for 11 euros and it really does the trick with PSX and SNES games.
I wrote a wiki node of it http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Logitech_Gamepad. |
