Getting ATI Radeon Framebuffer to work with x700 series cards (and possibly others) in native resolution such as 1280x800

I recently found a patch for the newer ATI mobility cards to get framebuffer working in native resolution, such as 1280x800. This hopefully will come handy with gensplash for those who have also struggled with vesa-tng and gotten only (relatively ugly) 1024x768 resolution. :wink:

I filed a feature enhancement about this so it could be included in genpatches.

So, let's get cracking!

  • install gentoo-sources-2.6.18-r6
    Code:
    emerge =gentoo-sources-2.6.18-r6

  • Download ATI ATOM BIOS patch from http://www.shaftnet.org/~pizza/radeonfb-atom-2.6.18-v6a.diff
    Code:

    # wget http://www.shaftnet.org/~pizza/radeonfb-atom-2.6.18-v6a.diff

  • assuming /usr/src/linux points to /usr/src/linux-2.6.18-r6:
    Code:

    # cd /usr/src/linux/drivers/video/aty
    # patch -p1 < /path/to/radeonfb-atom-2.6.18-v6a.diff

  • configure kernel with
    Code:

    ->Device Drivers
       ->Graphics support
         ->[*] ATI Radeon display support
               [*] DDC/I2C for ATI Radeon support

  • compile and install kernel
  • configure grub by adding line to kernel parameters in /boot/grub/grub.conf:
    Code:

      video=radeonfb:1280x800-32

  • reboot and enjoy your radeonfb framebuffer :D

:!: I have tested this with only one laptop ( Acer Aspire 5021WLMi) , so bear with me if it does not work for you
