alsasound start hangs machine hard with 1.3b system.

I emerged alsa-drivers and utils. followed the desktop guide from gentoo. I can modprobe the necessary drivers, and I belong to the necessary 'audio' group. But if I do 'alsasound start' the whole system locks hard. This never happened when I had gentoo 1.2. I removed alsa sound from the default runlevel so that I can reboot. I can still modprobe necessary drivers, but can't run alsasound without a hang. anyone experience this, or have a clue?

u dont need to run alsasound...the new version of alsa loades itself while u load the drivers...

same problem ---> /usr/sbin/alsactl
it isn't the alsasound script.

any ideas?

I installed alsa and it works fine... but even as root (since I rebooted after I installed all the alsa components), alsactl "doesn't exist".
I used it right after I installed alsa and it worked as it should... but it's not there anymore.
Any thoughts?
