Hello,
This is a slightly different problem than I had before. I can't su to root and the root password is not accepted by gksu either. I get "su:permission denied" for both of them. However, if I login on a different console as root it works just fine (as does logging in as root to gnome). This happened after I rebooted, after having installed vmware-workstation (5.5.x, the latest). I followed the instructions on the gentoo wiki (http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_setup_VMware), including the ones at the bottom for the newer versions of vmware. I also found that I couldn't run vmware as a regular user unless I changed the ownership of /etc/vmware to my normal user (but I changed this back later). I added root and my regular user to the vmware group. I tried re-emerging shadow and gksu to no avail. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

There's also an entry in the FAQ Forum, as well as countless other threads we've not "caught."
