Hello all,

in the past I've been able to install xmms just be typing

Code:

emerge xmms

but now that doesn't work.

So I did a search:

Code:

root@bbtv ~ # emerge -s xmms
Searching...
[ Results for search key : xmms ]
[ Applications found : 0 ]

I thought tat was pretty strange. I resynced with
Code:
emerge --sync

and tried again with the same results.

Then I went to the packages data base:
http://packages.gentoo.org/

and it wasn't there either

I tried on one of my other systems with the same results.

Whatever happened to xmms? Am I in the twilight zone?

I think xmms is unmaintained, why don't you use audacious (xmms based) or xfmedia. It's GTK2.
According to the Gentoo Newsletter, xmms will be removed from portage:

Wow, that is quite a huge thing. As long as I've been using linux (8+ years), xmms has been the media player of choice. I'm surprised that the old version is not just left there for posterity. i guess that if I want the old ne, then have to get it from somewhere else. Is there a policy to pressure users to use this other player, audacious?

Thanks for making me aware of that.

It was removed. There was much bloodshed.... :(

That said, it was unmaintained. I miss it, but you can still get the ebuild from cvs and put it in a local overlay if you really need it. Unfortunately, the dependancies meant it is on its way out sooner or later anyhow.

Yeah :( Sad thing.... They just want people to move to bloat called Amarok or Banshee sad to say :( Xmms was a great media player... After it was gone I just moved over to MPD.. Works great. Audacious is ok, but not the same as Xmms..

I liked it too, however, it behaved badly on my system.
Oh well, Audacious looks and feels like Xmms.

My 2cents

Audacious is fine, it just seems sluggish compared to xmms. But then so does aterm....

Sluggish? Check that this is ticked: Preferences - Audio - detect file formats on demand.

Give 'xfmedia' a try. (If it compiles) One of the best (not so bloated, but can play videos on demand) media player.
