|
|
i've an ext3 partition at /dev/hda7 -> /mnt/data mounting rw at boottime.
a few days ago this fs started to become read-only without any cause. a "mount /dev/hda7 -o rw,remount" doesnt fix the problem - no user nor root can write to this fs ( touch testfile ).
unmounting and remounting fixes it..
i ran a e2fsck which reported a few errors - but theyre now ok.
copying a large amount of data around the disk ( cp /mnt/data/dir1/* /mnt/data/dir2/. ) also produces a ro fs.
does anyone have an idea?

well ... got no real idea thou ... but maybe you try a diffrent fs like reiserfs or xfs ... i use reiserfs on about 80 machines for over two years now without any problems at all ... _________________ A mathematician is a machine for turning coffee into theorems. ~ Alfred Renyi (*1921 - †1970) |

ext3 has imho a better handling ( compability ) - but ok, the others do have other features.
-- please no discussion about the "best" fs here. please help me to solve my problem

Can you check your logs to see whether you have ide error messages? It sounds like your disk may be acting up since you report fs errors with things like copy.

Something similar happened to me on my scsi drive--my ext3 partition kept going ro. Turned out to be a bad scsi cable.
How a scsi cable goes bad sitting still inside a case, I've yet to figure out. Too much heat, perhaps.
