new dvd-rom and kernel freezes

hello,

I have 4 harddrives and had for some time 1 dvd-burner (yes lucky me got it for free) all went well.
When yesterdag I put a new dvd-rom in the place (ata100 controller second IDE/Master), my kernel freezes @ the point when he's done '/dev/hd?'ing it all and he gives out the IRQ for that controller and corresponding dev's it just freezes and can't do anything other then reset.

Somewhat frustrating as you would guess. I really can't change to another IDE (i haven't got the money, and even more i haven't got room to change it )
(too bad windows doesn't make any fuss about it ... again. ;()
Somebody help me please.
I find Gentoo sooo much user-friendly when it actually boots.

please i'm really in the dark here and i would not replug/unplug my dvd-rom forever to boot.
