Gdm com imagem embaralhada e KDE trava na inicialização

Boa tarde!!!

Estou com o seguinte problema:

Ao iniciar o gdm, não aparece a imagem corretamente, fica toda embaralhada, mas eu digito o nome do usuario, aperto enter e digito a senha e digito enter e carrega o KDE, até ai tudo bem, mas o KDE trava após a tela em que carrega os serviços e aparece o menu K.

O interessante é que se eu não deixo abrir o X, e digito /etc/init.d/xdm stop e depois /etc/init.d/xdm start, ai inicia o X e aparece o GDM normal e o pc não trava.

PS o problema aconteceu depois de eu tentar instalar o driver 3D ati-drivers

Ninguém tem alguma dica???

Mas desabilitei o inicio automatico do xdm/gdm e faço o login e digito /etc/init.d/xdm start e funciona normalmente.

Por favor, ajudem... e também não consigo aceleração 3D com minha ATI 8550

muito estranho isso, toda vez q eu nao consegui ligar o X por causa do driver da placa de video ele simplesmente nao ligava, nao rolava de conseguir entrar mesmo com a tela piscando, estranho, entao o q vc pode ver eh se seu xorg.conf esta configurado direitinho e tentar diferentes versoes do driver ate encontrar uma q eh compactivel com a sua placa grafica, as vezes eu tenho q fazer isso tbm.

Acho também que o problemas pode ser incompatibilidade de driver, mas por enquanto, vou efetuar o login no modo texto e depois inicio o xdm...
