Hello,

I have just installed Gentoo and, while compiling Fluxbox, am using centericq
for IM and elinks for web browsing. However, I have noticed that console
applications (including an X configuration program) look weird: they don't draw
messageboxes properly and when I browse through centericq's menu each option I
select gets redrawn a couple of spaces to the right (the old text doesn't get
erased). I tried updating ncurses and re-emerging elinks, but I still get the
same problem. Has this got anything to do with my custom console resolution? I
am not using standard 80 columns and 20-something lines, but rather vga mode
0x318.

Thanks in advance,
Vlad

did you use utf-8? if yes remember to set an unicode font. MC works also only correct with the slang use flag enabled.

I'm not sure whether or not I used Unicode, nor do I know how to change the
font in the console. Could you please detail that? Thank you.

in /etc/rc.conf check for
UNICODE="yes"

in /etc/locale.gen
en_US ISO-8859-1
en_US.UTF-8 UTF-8

in /etc/conf.d/consolefont you can set the consolefont;)
# /etc/conf.d/consolefont
CONSOLEFONT="lat2-16"
CONSOLETRANSLATION="8859-1_to_uni"

choose the right consoletranslation for your language.

Follow the gentoo unicode manual and you should get it right.

Thanks a lot! I'll read up on Unicode from the guide you recommended me. The problem has become secondary , now that I've compiled Fluxbox.
