Ah, I imaging both of you are suffering the stabling repercussions, anyone else experiencing this please wait a couple of hours and resync.

Well, I'm still having the problem. I resync again this evening and see if it's any better...

this worked for me on 2 different machines
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-3717161.html#3717161

Code:

emerge -C kde-env
emerge -1 kde-base/arts
emerge -1 kde-base/kdelibs
emerge -1 kde-base/kdesu
emerge -1 kde-base/kcminit

i.e. if you already did
Code:

 emerge -1 kdelibs

then its enuff to do remaining steps only

--oneshot (-1)
Emerge as normal, but do not add the packages to the world profile for later updating.

Anybody mind telling me why you don't want to add these:
Code:
emerge -1 kde-base/arts
emerge -1 kde-base/kdelibs
emerge -1 kde-base/kdesu
emerge -1 kde-base/kcminit

to the world file profile (is it cause their already in there)?

In brief, depclean. If a package is to be present in the installed system solely as a dependancy of another package it is preferable to not have it present in the world package set.

so the solution for mixing ggc versions was to do a "emerge -e world". but i installed x&kde right after my deep world update. so the -e world should solve the problem for me too?

I followed advise earlier in the thread and did:
Code:
emerge -C kde-env && emerge -1u kdelibs

That resolved one of the two blocking issues in upgrading to kde-3.5.5
Now I have the following block left:
Code:
[blocks B     ] >=kde-base/kdelibs-3.5.4-r2 (is blocking kde-base/kde-env-3-r4)

How to go from here ? Removing kde-libs seems a bit odd following the previous step....
(BTW, I synced earlier today)

For me it worked fine on two gentoo boxes (one desktop and one laptop) :
After having this error :
Code:
[blocks B     ] kde-base/kde-env (is blocking kde-base/kdelibs-3.5.5-r5)

I just did this (not only kdelibs) and the update was successfull :
Code:
emerge -C kde-env && emerge -va kde-meta

okay... i think i've tangled up the monolithic and individual packages. I've love to know how to disentangle them.

I can no longer emerge world. I get:
Code:
Calculating world dependencies... done!
[blocks B     ] =kde-base/kdegraphics-3.5* (is blocking kde-base/kdegraphics-kfile-plugins-3.5.5)
[blocks B     ] =kde-base/kdegraphics-3.5* (is blocking kde-base/kgamma-3.5.5)
[blocks B     ] =kde-base/kdegraphics-3.5* (is blocking kde-base/kcoloredit-3.5.5)
[blocks B     ] =kde-base/kdegraphics-3.5* (is blocking kde-base/kghostview-3.5.5)
[blocks B     ] =kde-base/kdegraphics-3.5* (is blocking kde-base/kuickshow-3.5.5)
[blocks B     ] =kde-base/kdegraphics-3.5* (is blocking kde-base/kamera-3.5.5)
[blocks B     ] =kde-base/kdegraphics-3.5* (is blocking kde-base/ksnapshot-3.5.5)

[blocks B     ] =kde-base/kdegraphics-3.5* (is blocking kde-base/kdvi-3.5.5)

Riiiiiight. Except i just UNMERGED kdegraphics. I ALSO get:
Code:
[ebuild  N    ] kde-base/kdegraphics-3.5.5

so it's being pulled back in. Just to add to the fun, i also see
Code:
[ebuild  N    ] kde-base/kdegraphics-kfile-plugins-3.5.5  USE="-arts -debug -kdeenablefinal -kdehiddenvisibility -openexr -xinerama" 0 kB

[ebuild  N    ] kde-base/kview-3.5.5  USE="-arts -debug -kdeenablefinal -kdehiddenvisibility -xinerama" 0 kB
[ebuild  N    ] kde-base/kmrml-3.5.5  USE="-arts -debug -kdeenablefinal -kdehiddenvisibility -xinerama" 0 kB

[ebuild  N    ] kde-base/kdvi-3.5.5  USE="-arts -debug -kdeenablefinal -kdehiddenvisibility -tetex -xinerama" 0 kB

AND
Code:
[ebuild     U ] kde-base/kdegraphics-meta-3.5.5 [3.5.2] USE="gphoto2 imlib -povray -scanner" 0 kB

How did i accomplish this? If i'm not mistaken, i have three different ways of pulling in the same packages going on here.
Code:
root@randomaccess ~ # equery depends kdegraphics
[ Searching for packages depending on kdegraphics... ]
kde-base/kde-3.5.2

Should i just completely pull out everything that is KDE and start over here? Or is there a better way out of this mess?

EDIT: It strikes me that perhaps unmerging -meta is the way to go. I'm going to try it now and post the results, whether it be "yes, that worked" or "don't ever do what i just did."

EDIT2: Um yeah. I don't know how i did it, but meta having sneaked in there was causing all the trouble. Still, i don't know how i got it on there when the monlithic package already was...

In any event, removing kdegraphics-meta make all fly good now. As an aside, maybe the package descrip for kdegraphics shouldn't say "pulls in the pacakges," since meta does the pulling, and the monolith actually contains them in one large package...?

Help me, for I messed up my system!!!

kde-env blocks kdelibs

The first thing to do is
Code:
emerge -C kde-env && emerge -1u kdelibs

Note: Stable users, try this:

Code:
emerge -C kde-env
emerge -1 kde-base/arts
emerge -1 kde-base/kdelibs
emerge -1 kde-base/kdesu
emerge -1 kde-base/kcminit

Did this, to no avail.
masterdriverz wrote:

If you still get blockers, chances are you have a stale eclass in an overlay (normally /usr/local/portage/eclass/kde.eclass). Remove this and all should be good.

I didn't have a /usr/local/portage/eclass/kde.eclass. But a
Code:
locate kde.eclass

showed me a file in /usr/portage/eclass. So I did
Code:
rm /usr/portage/eclass/kde.eclass

Now portage is full of errormessages. How can I undo the damage?

PLEASE HELP ME!!!! Thanks in advance...

I can try that, but I guess that wont be the solution. My errors look like this:

Code:
emerge -u world

Code:

  ebuild.sh, line 1195:   Called die

!!! kde.eclass could not be found by inherit()
!!! If you need support, post the topmost build error, and the call stack if relevant.

None of the tips work, I still get a massive block-list when emerging -uDa world:

It goes on and on like that, and quite effectively blocks me from updating world. Is this at all a problem with mixed up monolithic and meta installations of kde or are there some other possibilities?

edit: OK, I guess it was the monolithic packages after all. I did emerge -C for all the blockers but I guess that emerge -uDa world after that installed the monolithic kde back. Now it works again after all the blockers are removed, I just hope they won't be installed back like last time.

After updating to KDE-3.5.5, I can no longer start up with KDM. I can use startx (which contains exec startkde) and it starts fine. As well, I can unset $DISPLAYMANAGER in /etc/conf.d/xdm and set XSESSION="kde-3.5" in /etc/rc.conf and it starts from generic XDM.

The error I am getting in ~/.xssession-errors is as follows:

Quote:

I have re-emerged kwin, kdm, and kdeinit. I have run revdep-rebuild several times and even done a couple of emerge -e world. revdep-rebuild -p shows nothing to rebuild.

Any ideas?

I'm using GCC 4.1.1.

No KDE 3.5.5 for me??

edit by nixnut: inserted some line breaks to prevent layout breakage

Got same error, and after days of trying different tips or hints, I'm no at the point to set kde-3.5.5 unstable!

But now I can no longer reemerge the older kdeversion do tue 3.5.0 is no longer in portage, damm what to do now?
The only thing I do need from kde is k3b. Normaly I do work in fluxbox. The system likes to install dbus in version 1.x, k3b likes to install it in 0.62 and the older kde likes to install dbus in version 0.9x.

Why I did upgrade to gcc 4.1.1-r1?

After 3 hours of recompiling QT (from a hint) I got again and again the same error:

I have no idea, will be gentoo the right system for my 32bit single processor system?

Here's my error log:

When you try to compile kdelibs, it says at the beginning:
Quote:

* On some setups that relies on the correct update of utmp records, not using
* utempter might not update them correctly. If you experience unexpected
* behaviour, try to rebuild kde-base/kdelibs with utempter use-flag enabled.

Maybe you have to try that.

Currently, my system is still in process by reemerging the hole system since yesterday morning :(
I hope this will help at last.

Any ideas what would cause a "dcop server could not be reached" or something like that.

I tried for the first time to get kde to launch and it went on till the first screen and then it stalls and quit because the dcop server could not be reached...

Hi all!

Here's what happens when I open my printer configuring tool on kde:
Code:
Unable to retrieve the printer list. Error message received from manager:
Connection to CUPS server failed. Check that the CUPS server is correctly installed and running. Error: the IPP request failed for an unknown reason.

A very annoying popup message wich notice that CUPS doesn't work.

I don't know what can I do... It always worked for me.. Now problem arose from nothing.
I' can't also add a shared (via samba) printer from gentoo on my notebook. I can do that from a windows PC. No one problem to print with that shared printer.

I think I have cups problem on my notebook... I don't know why.. It's on its stable version.

I can also post some error messages:
Code:
# tail /var/log/cups/access_log
localhost - - [31/Dec/2006:11:50:56 +0100] "POST /printers/ HTTP/1.1" 200 112 CUPS-Get-Printers client-error-not-found
localhost - - [31/Dec/2006:11:50:57 +0100] "POST /printers/ HTTP/1.1" 200 112 CUPS-Get-Printers client-error-not-found
localhost - - [31/Dec/2006:11:50:58 +0100] "POST /printers/ HTTP/1.1" 200 112 CUPS-Get-Printers client-error-not-found

Code:
# tail /var/log/samba/log.gentoo
[2006/12/31 11:33:42, 0] passdb/pdb_smbpasswd.c:startsmbfilepwent(199)
startsmbfilepwent_internal: file /etc/samba/private/smbpasswd did not exist. Couldn't create new one. Error was: No such file or directoryUnable to open passdb database.

O_O what can I do?
