|
|
Well where do I start?! I need expert help yet again.
I compiled the latest 2.6 kernel today in the hope it might remove the System.map error on boot. Unfortunately, I must have missed something out as it didnt boot
So...boot of the trusty CD which has seen me right for all this time when I do something stupid like this...and yikes.....CD has popped its clogs....
Damn! But I remember that a friend has an old SCSI CD.....install it and after some parity errors and jigging of jumpers I am booted up....
chroot in and....
'Fatal: kernel too old'....
'Unimplemented Sparc call'
Or something like that......dooh! So close! When I installed it was a 2.4 kernel, but I upgraded to 2.6, but why would this make any difference....
Anybody point me in the right direction? I am so close to getting it back up again now. I just want to re-run silo so it boots off my last image..
Thanks,
Mark

You need to make sure you're using a new enough kernel - this is the error you get if you try to use tom's root/boot disk on x86 and then chroot to a gentoo image. |

I'm downloading the latest Universal iso (as the minimal / install CD would not boot?)
The iso I am using is a sparc universal iso 2006.0 IIRC....

OK 2006.1 worked fine, with both 2.6.16 & 2.6.17 onboard...
Has anyone else had any problems compiling 2.6.17-gentoo-r8?

OK, this is what I get.....and I have followed to the 'T' the installation handbook....
Quote: | VFS: Cannot open root device "sda1" or unknown-block(0,0)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0) |

I'll take a guess here.
You didn't compile your (S)ATA drivers into the kernel. |

It would seem so from this, but as its a U60 and does not have SATA, not sure what this would achieve. The only thing I can see that it is not turned on is:
SCSI Low level drivers
<M>Sparc ESP SCSI Driver |

Nobody had any issues compiling this kernel following the handbook?

I haven't.
Maybe your lspci output can help you find what's still missing. |

There must be something 'different' as I am running 2.6.17-r5 OK just by turning on the options as listed in the Gentoo Sparc handbook. But with 2.6.18-r8 it falls over.
I am not sure if it is a SCSI thing? I mean it finds that partition to book the kernel image, so would assume that SCSI is ok. Maybe an arch thing? I dunno! |

Not necessarily, not having the right drivers for harddisk controller or fs are the main cause for this error. |
