Hi all,

I'm currently looking for a nice PDA/Pocket PC. Now i was wondering who has successfully installed gentoo on 1 of these two? Now i know i can just use putty. But it would be cool to use gentoo on it. Of course wifi etc would have to be available what sadly enough limits the amount of working devices i think. So what are your experiences?

thnx in advance,
rullzer

No, there is no gentoo for the Nokia 770 yet. Nokia created a special linux distribution for the 770 - Maemo - which kind of makes sense.
The only PDA that gentoo runs on is Zaurus:
http://gentooforzaurus.opensistemas.com/
However, the community is quite small and not promoted by the device manufacturer.
Why does it have to be gentoo?

Nice job man ! I tried a few times to get gentoo on my girlfriend´s 4150 ( booting form sd).
Main trouble for me is the X setup ( it never worked) but it used to work nicely on console last time i tried.

Two questions though : why don´t you build against uclibc and mind to share x setup experiences ?

Thanks !

I prefer normal glibc instead of uclibc because some softwere don't work correctly on it.
Check ftp://gentoo.ru
Today I've upload working X to gentoo.ru
I'll be very glad if someone want to join this smal project ;-)

Think that'd work on a HP iPAQ 5500? Got an english version of the readme handy? :D

Ok, I'll make english version of readme and wiki page soon ;-)
All this packages were made for armv5te processors such as pxa27x
But they may work on pxa25x. I'm not sure :-(

i sure don´t have the same experience as you with pdas, but i´ve build gentoo several times for tiny environments and uclibc worked great, no major problems i could remember, vesa servers and some X apps included. Most were cli apps of course, i only remember alsa not building due to some upstream issue but i believe this has been fixed meanwhile.

Uclibc really looks like the way to go to me, what software doesn´t work correctly for you ?

cheers

My stage4 automaticaly start usbnet and ssh2 server
So you need to setup usbnet on your box
add this to your /etc/conf.d/net
Code:

config_usb0=( " 172.168.0.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 172.168.0.255 mtu 1000 " )

after this you can log into yor pda via ssh

additionaly you may share your portage and distfiles via nfs
