I have an SGI Octane that I'd like to attempt to put Gentoo on. All of the netboot images I've tried have failed. I've tried:

Every boot attempts to go but then I get 'entry: 0xa800000020798000' (or something similar) on the console.

Any ideas?

My hinv:
Code:

                   System: IP30
Processor: 250 Mhz R10000, with FPU
     Primary I-cache size: 32 Kbytes
     Primary D-cache size: 32 Kbytes
     Secondary cache size: 2 Mbytes
              Memory size: 512 Mbytes
                  Network: ef0 ethernet (100/10 base-T)
                SCSI Disk: scsi(0)disk(1)
                    Audio: RAD Audio Processor
                 Graphics: ESI

Are you doing something like

bootphostip

bootp():192.168.1.X: root=/dev/ram0

In the prom menu? (Hitting escape and then 5 to go into this at bootup time)

I had several problems with my prom menu until I reset the env and then figured out the bootp commands a little better.
I also noticed a few of the images on the gentoo kumba site either booted with the wrong keyboard mapping for the control keys, hence i couldn't control-c out of stuff, and the network drivers are kind of hosed on a few as well, but I think there were two working ones that had absolutely no problems booting on my Octane.

I'll see if I can figure out which ones they were.

I managed to get http://distfiles.gentoo.org/releases/mips/2006.1/netboot/ip30r10k.img to boot on my Octane (175MHz R10000, 512MB RAM, SI graphics) but I found once Linux was up, I had no keyboard.

Once I've got an area cleared for the Octane to live (gotta clean up the house first) I'll look at trying serial console though. :-)

I told you... the exact URL even. :-)
Code:
537cb80583737b300b886411da2c2a7733f41ed6  /home/tftpboot/ip30r10k.img

^^ There, is the sha1sum of it.

As I say... I get no keyboard, but the machine does boot.

come to think of it, yeah i had the same problems with that kernel, my hinv reported in IRIX the following:

2 195 MHZ IP30 Processors
Heart ASIC: Revision D
CPU: MIPS R10000 Processor Chip Revision: 2.7
FPU: MIPS R10010 Floating Point Chip Revision: 0.0
Main memory size: 2048 Mbytes
Xbow ASIC: Revision 1.2
Instruction cache size: 32 Kbytes
Data cache size: 32 Kbytes
Secondary unified instruction/data cache size: 1 Mbyte
Integral SCSI controller 0: Version QL1040B (rev. 2), single ended
Disk drive: unit 1 on SCSI controller 0 (unit 1)
Integral SCSI controller 1: Version QL1040B (rev. 2), single ended
IOC3/IOC4 serial port: tty1
IOC3/IOC4 serial port: tty2
IOC3 parallel port: plp1
Graphics board: MXI
Graphics board: SI
Integral Fast Ethernet: ef0, version 1, pci 2
Iris Audio Processor: version RAD revision 12.0, number 1
PCI Adapter ID (vendor 0x10a9, device 0x0003) PCI slot 2
PCI Adapter ID (vendor 0x1077, device 0x1020) PCI slot 0
PCI Adapter ID (vendor 0x1077, device 0x1020) PCI slot 1
PCI Adapter ID (vendor 0x10a9, device 0x0005) PCI slot 3

So my Xbow is 1.2, I think all 4 of my Octanes are 1.2

if I wanted to link to my image I'd have to make a bzimage to get all the modules and stuff right? I compiled my kernel twice, once using the standard CFLAGS
and then again with the -O3 and it seems to run a little faster and in 64 bits...

brutus ~ # uname -a
Linux brutus 2.6.17.10-mipsgit-20060618 #4 SMP Thu Nov 16 10:45:43 GMT 2006 mips64 R10000 V2.7 FPU V0.0 SGI Octane GNU/Linux

Does it matter that I set smp to 4 cpus rather than 2?

(Sorry lots of questions, but I'm super excited that it's up and going!)

I managed to get my Octane going afterall. If you see this message when booting up:

Code:
IOC3 part: [060-0028-003], serial: [AAB7270506] => class unknown

That means the power supply isn't recognised, and thus you'll have problems. Namely, the serio subsystem isn't set up correctly, making the serial console useless, and PS2 sockets unusable.

A patch against the kernel is here: http://dev.gentoo.org/~redhatter/mips/sgi/ip30/patches/

I'll see if I can roll a fixed netboot image with this fix included. For the record, I also have XBow 1.2.
