when doing "emerge -uDva world" i get a lot of "masked or not exist" messages. how to handle them? what shall i do?

In short, XMMS has been masked, pending removal from the portage tree. You will need to remove it and all of the packages your emerge was complaining about from your system, disable the xmms USE flag, then re-emerge any packages that had been using that flag.
