When I did my Gentoo install, I used a console via the LOM port and everything worked great. However, now that I'm running my own kernel, I can't seem to get much out of the LOM console.

I can boot the machine and watch the ouput of the boot process on the LOM console and it ends with login: but then nothing.

I did notice a little tag during boot after turning on Boot-logging:

Code:
blogd: console=/dev/tty0, stdin=/dev/tty0, must differ, boot logging disabled

Would that have any relevance?

Never mind. Had the wrong serial module built... V100 uses sunsu module.

off-topic but I see you're using a V100 (like me).

Any chance you could send me your kernel config and any build documentation you might have and current PROM revs? My first v100 went really smooth on 2006.1 with RAID1 but despite building to identical standards the next 3 V100's all hard hang at (seemingly) random intervals on boot (even when using the same kernel from the working system). 2 of these systems were previously running 2006.0 with a 2.4 kernel no RAID without a problem.

I'm going to get to the DataCenter to power-cycle the servers this week and I can check the PROM revs then to see if I can see what's going on.

let me know if you can,

thanks Mark.

My V100 took quite a while to get going and boot the 2006.1 CD. I updated to the latest OBP (can't recall the versoin off the top of my head). Originally kept hanging over and over during boot. I reburnt the 2006.1 CD from the image mid-October and it's worked ever since. It took me about 15 tries to compile the kernel and get the thing to work. One boot-stopper was SMP support. It would not boot unless it was enabled. Not sure the reasoning, but that was one of my showstoppers. I don't believe I have USB installed since I never use it anyway.

I did have one other problem where the base setup somehow had devfs in it and I needed to replace it with udev. It was very strange since I am using the 2006.1 profile.

Here's my .config:

Thanks !

Mine all boot from 2006.1 universal without a problem using the 2617 kernel. It's interesting what you said about SMP causing a boot problem - I do have this turned off in all my kernel configurations. I'll get a chance to try this out on Thursday and compare your Kernel with mine. I also have USB disabled and udev (no devfs seems to work fine for me). These are all clean installs.

One problem I had with all of them which was new in 2006.1 was that I had to configure the network driver, tulip, as a module to get it to load instead of the default driver (which does not work). I didn't have to do this in 2005.x or 2006.0 but it seems important in this release.

thanks again - Mark

I read quite a few posts on the Ethernet being testy on the V100's so I just made mine modules anways. I also read quite a few places that DMA can cause problems on these machines, but I haven't had a problem with DMA at all.

From the tests i did when i had a couple of V100's around:

YMMV, to each it's own, whatever i say may be meaningless, no guarantees. With that being said, DMA seemed safe.

Network is a PITA (pain in the ass). The tulip driver is the best all-around but doesn't perform that great, dmfe is like completely hosed.
There's a 3rd option, manufacturer driver from davicom itself, seems to work great except for a minor detail: it lacks sparc-awareness, meaning it won't get the MAC address from prom and you'll just get an ugly 00:00:00:00:00:00 or so. This can easily be patched around by looking, for example, at the tulip driver. But merging kernel dmfe with davicom dmfe changes is pretty messy.

OK, since there are some people who know V100's here, now's a good time to ask an off-topic opinion.

I'm trying to make a 1U webserver to host a LAMP website. It will be running Joomla, phpBB, and phpList. I'm testing it on the V100 but I also have an IBM x330 dual P3 server kicking around. Would it be wise to let the V100 be the live server or safer to have the live server the IBM and keep the V100 as a test server?

Thanks

Here's my thoughts.. The Gentoo Sparc V100 is rock-solid as a production server, not much to break once you are up and running. I do have spare V100's though so if one of my LAMP servers fails I can quickly move hardware around. The V100 as you know only has one PSU but I haven't had any failures.

I also have some same vintage P3 hardware that I could use but I'm not seeing the same level of hardware reliability with those servers that I see in the V100. My V100 Gentoo Sparcs have been very stable.

The only thing I have to add is that it's taken a lot of work to get the V100 Gentoo Sparc working with RAID1 over the last couple of years. Many trial-and-error kernel and configuration rebuilds that in time alone would have paid for a couple of more recent 1U servers.

I'm really very glad we have the option of Gentoo Sparc and 2006.1 seems like the best yet (and I would like to see how Gentoo Sparc performs on the new Sun Hardware).

Thanks for the feedback. I think the Sun V100's are rock solid, though I've also found my IBM 1U's are equally solid so that's not a major factor.

I did a few benchmarks this morning with ab2 serving a little "Hello" page - one with HTML and one with PHP. Both running eAccelerator as well.

Unfortunately, the V100 isn't a speed demon in the least. Maximum is about 790 requests/sec @ 270 k/sec using static pages. Using PHP that number drops in half. Ouch.

The IBM x330 I have actively running with more services (postifx, spamassassin, proxy support, asterisk, etc.) hits 2580 requests/sec @ 1038 k/sec running PHP. I didn't bother with static tests after that. Both tests run locally so the LAN isn't the bottleneck.

The requests per second isn't too bad for what I'm doing but peaking out at 270k/sec locally, 135k/sec using php makes me nervous running Joomla and phpBB.

Thoughts?

On an off-topic note, using mpm-worker/threads on my multi-cpu machines was worse than using mpm-prefork, no threads. eAccelerator dies on quad-cpu setups but works fine on dual CPU configs if using mpm-worker. eAccelerator works fine on quads with mpm-prefork.

First of all I was able to bring up another v100 once I rebuilt the kernel with SMP support - so it looks like this might be the fix. Thanks !

I haven't done any benchmarking on the v100's for a long time so I can do some comparisons with 2006.1 and my latest AMP build on mine and see. I'm also using the mpm_worker with eacclerator although recently have switched to PHP5 (from PHP4) now that eaccelerator supports this. I'll run some benchmarking on this new system (can't use the other) and let you know what my results are to compare... should be interesting.

just a quick initial test on the V100 (not complete)

2006.0 2.4 Kernel Apache Prefork: PHP Hello World 1111.19 request/sec 301.58kb/s
2006.1 2.6 Kernel Apache Worker: PHP Hello World 430 request/sec 155.22kb/s

I wouldn't read much into this as I haven't spent much time tuning my 2006.1 config or trying prefork but the first number shows what is possible on the V100.

That looks quite similar to my test results. I just did another test with that IBM but with a hardened kernel Prefork and got 3400+ requests/second @ 800k/sec over the LAN. It wasn't any more tuned than the Sun. I guess if I have both machines sitting idle, the IBM looks more attractive for a live server while the Sun looks like a nice little testing server.

One odd note, though. As I moved data to the new server, for some reason the Sun machine would not run mysqldump. I tried everything and always end up with a "Bus Error". Needless to say, that's a rather large stumbling block if I can't get a backup of my database easily.

I think the IBM is the way to go for your production !

mysqldump works for me but PM me if you want my configure script or if I can help with this.
