I get errors when running emerge. The error I get is this:
!! invalid db entry: /var/db/virtual/glibc
!! invalid db entry: /var/db/virtual/kernel
This happens running just about any emerge command. Here are 3 examples it does it with:
# emerge rsync
# emerge --pretend gaim
# emerge search everybuddy
The strange thing is that it doesn't keep it from performing the operation. It will still merge my package and run fine. Could it have to do with me installing off of a stage1 CD of a version prior to 1.0??

Run emerge -s portage. Among the output you see, should be something similar to this:

| try emerge --clean rsync then emerge --update world --pretend and see what it tells you to update...also what version of portage are you running..its up to 2.0.9 now |

"emerge --version" will also tell you what version you have installed, without relying on an up-to-date, accurate, or legal Portage tree to be installed.

I thought there was a version option. Interestingly enough, neither 'man emerge' or 'emerge -h' mention it.

Well, yeah, but a lot of apps have --version options, so documentation or not... 
Nevertheless, this is a doc bug, and was filed as #4633.

I think we may need a few more symptoms to get a hold of whats happening.
1. What were the last few changes you made before this started?
2. Did anything drastic happen before this started? ie. powerfailure, ctrl-c durring emerge, etc..
3. Anything else you can think of

It's been happening just about the whole time during the install. There may have been one or two toward the very beginning of install that it didn't happen on, but I'm not sure.

Nope, not really. I've had no powerfailures, nor any stoppage of any merges.

I really can't think of anything else. It's just really weird because the other machine that I installed gentoo on (from the same CD) didn't do this. BUT.....when I did the install on the other machine, that was pre-moving-of-rsync-servers. And when I did the install on that machine, what was on the CD is also what was most recent on the servers.

This may be a psychotic sugestion... maybe try rmdir'ing those two directories? I would really like some other comments on that

I say get rid of em (or move em) and see what happens 
I don't have them. Maybe it will work... hmmm.

Guess what.... I just created a /var/db/pkg/virtual/kernel directory and this is what i got when I ran 'emerge --version'
| Code: | root@Zorak:</var/db/pkg>: mkdir virtual
root@Zorak:</var/db/pkg>: cd virtual
root@Zorak:</var/db/pkg/virtual>: mkdir kernel
root@Zorak:</var/db/pkg/virtual>: emerge --version

I'm guessing it's 1.0 since the files on the CD are
isolinux
stage1-ix86-1.0.tbz2
stage2-i686-1.0.tbz2
stage3-i686-1.0.tbz2
I built the system from stage1 and didn't use 2 or 3. The bad behavior is on a P3-500, the system that behaved when I installed a month or whatever ago is a P2-300. Both have 128MB RAM.

The kernel entry is:
desk1 root # cat /var/db/pkg/vitural/kernel/VIRTUAL
sys-kernel/linux-headers-2.14.17-r5
and glibc is similar. I'm a little leary of deleting it since I don't know why it's there. I don't know it's safe to delete. (Though you'd think so if it's causing errors ;-p)

Well "the first step in avoiding a trap is knowing of it's existence." Or rather, the first step in solving an error is being able to reproduce it.
1st I'd check if your really have them installed
Then I would see if 'linux-headers-2.14.17-r5' exists elsewhere in /var/db/pkg. 'find /var/db/pkg -name linux...'
Personally, I would move the directories somewhere safe and see what happens. But I would prefer if a portage developer or guru would throw in his/her 2 cents
