Hi!
I'm an old neowinian(www.neowin.net) and there we've had the "post your desktop" thing split into months with great results.
The older links tend to die as time goes on, and by peeking into "this months" forum you can see what people manage to do with their latest emerges and hacks.
As for the "why"; I think of PC's like a car, I like to polish it and show it off in front of my friends. Most people do. And we could help the n00bs or those who don't know where to look find cool backgrounds and widgets styles. I use the threads for inspiration, and I think many people do to.
Here's a linkie to the June neowin.net desktop thread:

Yhea!
I think that there should be a section on the newsletter with the best screenshot of the week _________________ Lego my ego, and I'll lego your knowledge

I think that's a great idea. I enjoy looking at screenshots a little too much though if you ask me _________________

I don't get the big deal. My screens are always covered with windows. I never see my background. I've got 2 19 inch screens, and I don't have enough screen space for my liking, I don't know how anyone can ever see their background.
I suppose your also talking about window frames and stuff, but to be honest they look fine as they are in KDE.
You must be all very unproductive and spend your time staring at your backgrounds.

Heck, when I get to work in the morning it takes me at least 5-10 minutes (my work computer is slow) to get all my programs running and where I want them so I am most productive...vim split vertically, a couple of consoles, web browser (etc). If I weren't forced to use Windows at work I'd script all that. And when I'm all done the entire screen is covered in windows. |

When I boot up all my windows appear exactly where I left them when I shutdown. When I used to "shutdown" in windows I'd only ever put it into STR mode so I'd just press the button and everything would appear as it was when I left in about 5 seconds time. If you don't want to leave any power on have you considered hibernating your windows PC? Depends on how stable your windows is I suppose. Mine rarely needed rebooting so just sleeping it was fine.

The problem is I have to log out when I go home for the day. I work in a lab with a bunch of other people so I don't have a system that is specifically mine. |
