Uhm... potresti provare ad usare qpkg dal pacchetto gentoolkit per rintracciare che cosa lo richiede come dipendenza. Dovrebbe essere uno dei pacchetti che appaiono dopo di lui quindi forse gimp-print, a sua volta richesto da ghostscript? (anche se è strano).
Poi puoi spulciare l'ebuild per capirci di più.

Effettivamente spulciando l'ebuild di ghostscript 7.05.6 hanno aggiunto a DEPEND:

Infatti se provo a lanciare un:

USE=-cups emerge -upvUD world |
non mi installa piu' gimp...
Vabbe' ora vedo cosa fare.
