Hi every body:
I emerged MC (midnight commader) a few weeks ago. But when I executed mc I get a display that look awful, I mean that the lines do not display instead a group of characters are display and that make that very stanges things happen. However, that only happens when I am in text mode console because when I am in gnome and execute a console with MC then MC display it so good.
I don't know how it's possible this happen ???
I think it is a problem with codification but I am new with gentoo so I don'know.
Could you help me please ???
greetings. |

Yes, MC is one of a few applications that are known to look better with unicode disabled. |

The same way you create USE flags for any other packages. Read the handbook! Here it is in a nutshell:
Code: | # echo "app-misc/mc -unicode" >> /etc/portage/package.use
# emerge -avN app-misc/mc |

In my case, compiling mc with or without uncode flag doesn't change the awful display in the console.
What I said was to edit /etc/rc.conf and change the line UNICODE="yes" to UNICODE="no" |

Unicode USE flag for mc works only together with slang USE flag. You have to enable slang for mc to allow it to use utf-8 correctly.
To disable utf-8 you probably need to use non-uft-8 locale.
See Using UTF-8 with Gentoo for more info. |
