What happened with DISPLAYMANAGER variable in rc.conf?
Before in rc.conf we had commented line with question:
# What display manager do you use ? [ xdm | gdm | kdm | entrance ]
and below:
DISPLAYMANAGER=""
should I add DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm", since I use kdm as displaymnager, in new rc.conf file? If yes then why new rc.conf, and if no what happened with DISPLAYMANAGER variable?

If you had read the file properly, you would have realized (like me) that the XSESSION variable now does the trick.
I'm not sure if it was a good idea, as I prefer to use XSESSION for when I'm in text-mode and I want to start something light like fluxbox and DISPLAYMANAGER for kdm. Maybe they will revert to it tomorrow |

well , i have just tried it and XSESSION doesn't do the trick. It starts xdm (I want kdm) + xdm will not start kde.
And how should XSESSION read my mind and know what displaymanager I want to use? Even if someone run kde as I, he/she may want to use gdm as displaymanager.
It is good that DISPLAYMANAGER variable still works. |

Hi
Check the '/etc/conf.d/xdm'.
It has been moved from rc.conf. |

FWIW I was confused by this as well
Probably our noob status, but the following is unedited in the new rc.conf
| Quote: |
# XSESSION is a new variable to control what window manager to start
# default with X if run with xdm, startx or xinit. The default behavior
# is to look in /etc/X11/Sessions/ and run the script in matching the
|
Are you saying that selecting kde-3.5 launches kdm or Gnome launches gdm, looking in /etc/X11/Sessions/ does not appear to do so? How do individual users select their preferred window manager? |

Actually apparently it's still supposed to be in rc.conf
https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=153955
also when i actually read my /etc/conf.d/xdm:
# What display manager do you use ? [ xdm | gdm | kdm | entrance ]
# NOTE: If this is set in /etc/rc.conf, that setting will override this one.
DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm" |
