Hi. Right now I'm using Xorg 7.0 and ati-drivers 8.24.8. I have an ATI Radeon Xpress 200m. The reason why i'm using the 8.24.8 drivers and not the latest is because the drivers I have now are the only ones guaranteed to give me 3D acceleration with my graphics card. And i'm not using Xorg 7.1 because I know it'll break my proprietary drivers and I won't get 3D acceleration. But what I want to know right now is if anyone has tried the latest ati drivers and the latest xorg with my type of graphics card, and if you did what kind of results did you get? Also, if I were to upgrade xorg and ati-drivers, how can I downgrade both if necessary? Thank you for your help. |

Hi,
I read about the latest ati drivers and it seems that there is support fot Xorg 7.1. I have an old ATI radeon 9600 and Xorg 7.1 and ati-drivers 8.29.6 and I get rendering working.
You can backup your current builds with where package the packages you want to backup. Then you could emerge the new packages and if they dont work you could revert back to the old ones.
Another much timeconsuming and hard aproach is to get a full backup of your system (I do that every 15 days with a live cd) and then test anythig you want. If it doesn't work you just restore the whole thing and everything is back to normal.
Hope this gives you an idea.
