Just got Gentoo up and running mostly the way I want it. I'm in KDE 3.0 right now with a pretty theme and everything, so I'm happy, but I've got a problem.

Problem A:

When things get demanding, like transfering 5.6GB of backed up data over the network, or installing UT (for some odd reason, it does it when I try to do this) it just locks up, totally. Not for very long, maybe 10-15 seconds. But I waited it out one time when it was installing UT, and it locked up one time so long I just gave up and hit the reset switch as much as I hated to.

I'm running a 1.33 GHz Athlon Thunderbird, 256MB RAM, 2 60GB ATA/100 HD's, GeForce4 Ti 4400, SB Live! Value. All that is running Gentoo 1.3a (as of last night). I'm running KDE 3.0.1 (I guess.... whatever the newest is).

Problem B:

When I'm at the command, how do I get it to show me what directory I'm in, rather then the version of bash? For instence, right now it looks like this:

Code:
bash-2.05a$

But my debian box looks like this:

Code:
cmiller@www0:/usr/local$

I had the same prob with things locking up[ during lots of disk activity and i think it was related to harddisk performance. try doing a forum search for hdparm and follow the instructions. my DMA was not turned on once that was on drive performance was much better

That hdparm thing fixed the lock ups. I think a 12.4226 times increse in performance for the HD's would fix just about anything.

What about the bash thing? Also, why doesn't home and end work any more in bash? Delete doesn't work either. What a pain.

Do a search for bash prompt or PS1. PS1 is the variable you will need to edit to get the prompt to look how you want. I have seen many example ps1's in these forums.

Slightly more specific, there are prompt examples in the Tips & Tricks forum.

If this is a Konsole problem (sounds like it) edit the first line of your startkde script (usually in /usr/kde/3/bin, unless you've done some customization) to

#!/bin/sh -login

That'll source /etc/profile correctly, and should fix your prompt woes.
