Which do YOU think is better? I tried the live CD for Gentoo, and have Ubuntu as my normal OS, and I'm a Linux beginner, so I personally like Ubuntu, but they seem almost alike.
P.S: If possible, please post reason for vote. _________________ Windows sucks. |

I like apples, although oranges are tasty as well. Other than that, LDAP is better than SMTP, The English Patient was clearly a better movie than lobsters are at dancing, Lamborghinis are much better than the letter J, and one catches better fish trolling than one does baiting. _________________ Military Commissions Act of 2006: http://tinyurl.com/jrcto

Tried Ubuntu under VMware, and was annoyed at all the BS dependencies. Gave up trying to "minimize" an install fairly quickly. (Yes, Gentoo has some annoying deps. too, but fewer). _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

Gentoo and Ubuntu both have entirely separate goals and target audiences. You can't easily compare the two because of that.
Gentoo, for example, as a target audience of tech enthusiasts and people who like to tinker with things, whereas Ubuntu's target is the end-user who simply wants to get some work done without fuss of configuring things.
Gentoo is a source-based distribution, which means that installing packages takes a longer time (due to the compilation), but that provides some benefits in terms of configurability over the binary packages provided by Ubuntu which are less time-consuming to install, but may or may not be configured the way one would prefer.
Really, the best choice is to try both for a long time and see which one you are more comfortable with. Perhaps even bring other distributions like Fedora into the mix. _________________ ~~ Peter: Programmer, Mathematician, STEM & Free Software Advocate, Enlightened Agent, Transhumanist, Fedora contributor

You can figure out the rest of the metaphors by yourself, I hope... _________________ Military Commissions Act of 2006: http://tinyurl.com/jrcto
