Hi, ALL,
Iam not sure if this should go to this forum or the one with the kernel. If it's not for this one, don't hit me too hard....

I successfully performed an install from Gentoo 2005.0 CD using the archives from 2006.0. However, after re-booting, I am receiving following message:

Code:

udevd_event[1170]:find_free_number: %e is deprecated, will be removed and is unlikely to work correctly. Don't use it

Is it possible to get rid of this message somehow?

Thank you.[/code]

Hi I don't think anyone will hit you hard for anything here, don't worry. :)

I am not an expert but I know that this message is no reason to worry. Just forget about. I do suspect however that it is not easy to get rid of, because I know that on a debian install this message also appears when booting and I'd definitely suspect that they would get rid of it in a binary distribution since they usually have the means to tailor everything a little more. Just forget about it i'd say.

PS: Why did you use a Gentoo 2005.0 Cd and 2006.0 Archives? Both are availlable for 2006.1. I mean there's nothing wrong with that, just curious if you have a particular reason

OK, this is good to know.
A for the reasoning:
the 2006.1 does not have a i586 stage, so it's a "no-go". And when I tried to boot-up with the 2006.0, I couldn't get past "Unzipping gentoo.igz", then the PC would re-boot.
So, the only thing was to perform an 2005.0 install with the 2006.0 files...

Thank you.

Now that's more of a problem, did you file a bug or at least post it somewhere on the forum? Or is this a known issue already?

ONEEYEMAN "Is it possible to get rid of this message somehow?"

davelet in http://www.mepislovers.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=16787 shows how to change the udev rules to get rid of this message

In another message in these forums, a poster explained that %e had been marked "deprecated" by the upstream developers who hadn't yet agreed on what (if anything) was to take its place.

Other comments:

Quote:
The enumeration format character '%e' is deprecated and will be
removed sometimes from a future udev version. It never worked correctly
outside of udevstart, so we can't use it with the new parallel
coldplug. A simple enumeration is as useless as the devfs naming
scheme, just get rid of both if you still use it.

Quote:
These things are deprecated and scheduled for removal in a future
udev version:

- o remove broken %e enumeration
- (simple enumerations can't work reliably and should go)
-
o remove udevstart
(we rely on the kernel "uevent" triggers of kernel 2.6.15 and no longer
want to guess event properties from sysfs like udevstart is doing it)

Do you think wikipedia would be glad of an entry on this subject? :D
