Hi!

I'm trying to repair a friends computer.
He had a dual boot gentoo/winxp.
He reinstalled winxp and ofcourse the bootmanager was overwritten by the instal.

When trying to boot from the Gentoo 1.4-rc3 live cd as well as some 1.2 live cd I am unable to mount any drives.

when trying fdisk /dev/hda returns:
Code:

end_request: I/O error, dev 03:00 (hda), sector 0
end_request: I/O error, dev 03:00 (hda), sector 1
end_request: I/O error, dev 03:00 (hda), sector 2
end_request: I/O error, dev 03:00 (hda), sector 3
end_request: I/O error, dev 03:00 (hda), sector 4
end_request: I/O error, dev 03:00 (hda), sector 5
end_request: I/O error, dev 03:00 (hda), sector 6
end_request: I/O error, dev 03:00 (hda), sector 7

Unable to read /dev/hda

mounting the partitions isn't possible as well.

Code:

#mount /dev/hda5 /mnt/test
end_request: I/O error, dev 03:05 (hda), sector 2
EXT3-fs: unable to read superblock
end_request: I/O error, dev 03:05 (hda), sector 2
EXT2-fs: unable to read superblock
end_request: I/O error, dev 03:05 (hda), sector 64
isofs_read_super: bread failed, dev=03:05, iso_blknum=16, block=32
...
XFS: bad magic number
XFS: SB validate failed
mount: Mounting /dev/hda5 on /mnt/test failed: Invalid argument

since it's a reiserfs partition i also tried
Code:

#mount /dev/hda5 /mnt/test - t reiserfs
end_request: I/O error, dev 03:05 (hda), sector 128
isofs_read_super: bread failed (dev 03:05, block 128, size 512)
end_request: I/O error, dev 03:05 (hda), sector 16
isofs_read_super: bread failed (dev 03:05, block 16, size 512)
mount: Mounting /dev/hda5 on /mnt/test failed: Invalid argument

any suggestions?

well he said that he didn't touch anything on the partition tables.
also it's not the ntfs drive that is causing problems. that would be ok, and no problem. but the reiserfs partitions.

Take out the harddisk from his computer and insert it to yours then you partition it.. This helped me when i got similar errors.

well if possible he would like to keep his gentoo install. it's only the bootmanager that's missing. the partitions should be ok.
