Use the "demo" USE flag for darkplaces, and it pulls in quake1-demodata. So a CD is not needed.

I find most games I try, including tetris and bzflag, addictive. Half-life is about the only game that I've liked and can play a reasonable amount. I wonder if it still have decent sized user base?

EDIT - Sorry for the spammy post! It works now! I wasn't running it as 'darkplaces-demo'! DUH!

$ more /etc/portage/package.use
games-fps/darkplaces alsa opengl oss sdl -cdinstall cdsound -dedicated demo dpmod lights textures

$ darkplaces

I'm completely addicted to browser-based text games. Sort of like MUDs, but easier to do thing because you just click.

One in particular I play a lot is called Awakened Lands. It's way addicting. Check it out.

No, but you can run it through Wine.

games-action/barrage is a fun little addictive game.

You are a cannon-type thing, shooting tanks/jeeps/soldiers for points. Points keep going down at a slow pace, and every reload takes off. My high score is 2900.

Step #3) You don't like RTS type fantasy games - go do something else LOL...

Oh yeah:

Old school (as in, DOS days IIRC): Chopper Attack

CGA graphics (possibly just black + one other color), nothing much to it.. it was a side-scroller where you were a helicoptor pilot and were tasked with either a rescue, bombing, and maybe something else. I have no idea why, but I probably wasted _days_ playing that stupid game. Depending on how fast you were traveling (and you could get going pretty damn fast), you could crash and make a big hole in the ground (faster = bigger hole). I seem to remember some weird obsession with creating bigger and bigger holes.

Nearing old school: Everquest

You want to talk about wasting time, I could have written the official book on it (but I was too busy playing EQ). Luckily, my time in EQ permanently killed my desire to play MMORPGs (or really computer games at all). So now that WoW is bigger than EQ ever was, I consider it time well spent (sure).

Recent: Ninja Gaiden (XBOX)

Fantastic game. Probably the best game on the original Xbox if you're not a FPS fan (which I'm not). I played this so much that I was one of three winners in the first online tournament and picked up a ninja sword signed by the creator of the game. I had a chance to win a trip to Tokyo for the world finals, but I was so burned out by the time that came around that I didn't really even care. No regrets with this one.. just a really well designed game.

--

So those aren't really linux games, but most others strayed from that as well.. :)

Only Wesnoth is TBS, not RTS. [That's Turn-Based rather than Real-Time.]

I'd go for griddlers type games, also called nonograms and "paint by numbers". While I'm not a big fan of logic/puzzle games this is the most addictive game I've played.
Search sourceforge.net for "paint by numbers" though I usually play online at griddlers.net.
Give it a try...

well now that your talking about valve games, last weekend was a free Day of Defeat : source weekend... that game roxorz my soxorz. I fell in love, to the point where im willing to dish out 50 bucks to buy the HL2 Platinum Edition version of the game. :o

I had to trash Linux Gaming tho. ATI cards are crap. So even cool native linux game crashed on me because of the card. Got to play some games on linux, but with decreased performance. Window$ is unfortunately the way to game atm for me.

Ill give it another shot when i get a Nvidia card, which is next computer upgrade. :D

Midtown Madness 2. I played multiplayer for two months, but Microsoft shut down the Zone for MM2.
