So, I had an old Gentoo partition lying around waiting for 1.0 to come out. 1.0 arrived and I was too busy ... but now, I've got some time.

Anyway, I did an emerge --update system and picked through my ._cfg* files (what a pain in the ass) and then I randomly typed qpkg --dups. The long and short of this is that I have 51 duplicate packages installed out of 151 total packages. I think it works out that 1/3 of my packages are unnecessary.

My question is this: how can I remove the packages that I have newer versions of (and that do now have dependencies upon earlier versions)?

Regards,
Mark

first of all look here:

then look here:

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/portage-manual.html

And if you not know the answer after reading this you may come back ;-)

I'll ignore the condescention implicit in recommending the first link and I'll thank you for the second link. My printed out copy of the Portage User Guide is woefully out of date and quite unhelpful.

The new guide is very thorough. Congrats and thanks to the author(s). Documentation is always the bastard son of development.

Oh, and for anyone looking for the answer to my original question, try looking up "emerge clean" (or just typing it if you feel brave).

Regards,
Mark
