the side of my thinkpad 600 as a little rhombus connector, then a case thingy that allows me to load the swappable modules into it, ie the floppy drive or cdrom drive. but i cant get it to be recongnised. i cant mount anything in it. does anyone have any familarity with what im talking about?

I have a tp 600x and have had no problem with the drive. What exactly is going on. It would be helpful if you gave a more exact desctiption.
With the cdrom drive in try the following command
The /dev/cdrom might also be /dev/hdc. Check your /dev folder.
Lets see if we can at least narrow the problem down
