install CD doesnt detect networking hardware?

So I have an old G4 350mHz (sawtooth maybe?) and it's refusing to use the network hardware. I've tried net-setup and manually kicking up dhcpcd to no avail. Any clues? I had a friend with a blue and white G3 who said he had the same problem (wishing I hadn't told him he was crazy). Anyhow ifconfig shows eth0 up but no IP address is given. I even gave it a static IP thru net-setup but ifconfig still showed no IP.

I'm not really sure what's going on there. Are there *any* network cards being detected? If so, which ones? You might want to try the bmac driver (modprobe bmac) but that might only be on the B+W machines.

it lets me select eth0 and it calls it " Apple Computer Inc. UniNorth GMAC (Sun GEM)" so I'm assuming the kernel recognizes it. But then again it's not working so I must be wrong.

Okay, so we built in bmac this time, but you don't need it anyway. :p

SunGEM is certainly built in. We've seem to be having lots of issues with dhcpcd though, so can you try manually setting an ip?

ifconfig eth0 x.x.x.x

Does that set? If so, then try setting the gateway (route add default gw x.x.x.x). Can you now ping outside the network (no dns yet)? If so, well, the network is working. If not, can you check dmesg and tell us what it says?

You're using 2006.1 right? Can you try booting 2006.0 and see if it works there?

Just a quick note if anyone else gets stuck here. Even though the network was working I could not get it to resolve until I made a proper /etc/resolv.conf

And to get it to take I had to run net-setup after it was inserted and an IP address was set to eth0

I had a similar problem, I had the network going down randomly (no route to host or many ping failures) and could never imagine it was a dhcpcd fault.

I thought I had broken my ethernet port or card, but it was working in OS-X so I came here and found dhcp was guilty
